The News and Courant (Cartersville, Bartow, Georgia), 7 May 1903, p.1.

Lizzabel Saxon, of Cartersville, received the medal for best declamation among the girls in the first State Declamation Exercise given by the Georgia Declamation Association. The contest took place Saturday at Southern Female College in College Park. Thirty-five local students and three chaperones, including R. L. Saxon, father of the local contestant, traveled from Cartersville to attend the exercise.

Sutton, 'the alleged bigamist,' who married Miss Young, of this place, and having a wife and several children in Chattooga county, and who was out on a bond of $1,000, was delivered up by his bondsman (his father-in-law) last Monday, and lodged in jail in Marietta, to await trial in November."

History of Pritchett Girl Cousins Reunion

Several Pritchett cousins, daughters of Fred, Sue, and Carl Pritchett (granddaughters of Esther (Headrick) Pritchett, got together in 2008 and began a tradition of getting together for an annual reunion. They would rent a house or cabin for a long weekend or sometimes a week. At most places, day trips to nearby attractions were also included. One living aunt, Leola (Bryant) Pritchett, was invited. Not everyone could come all years, but all who could come enjoyed their time together. The ten cousins are: Donna, Deborah, Susan, Missy, Freida, Linda, Sherry, Sharon, Wanda, and Karen.

Needs update: we know a little more now...

Nancy (Petty) Murray in Oklahoma

Winfield Scott Murray had died in 1877. Afterwards, Nancy had moved from Fannin County to Murray County, Georgia. Sometime early in the 20th century, before 1910, Nancy MURRAY and her grown offspring, Elias, Will, and Jane, move to Comanche County, Oklahoma, by way of Texas. We know that Elias and possibly Will were in Texas part of the time before settling in Oklahoma.

Will marries Ninnie SNIDER. Their descendants live in Comanche County, Oklahoma. Elias married Vera SMITH late in life. Vera never has any children. Jane MURRAY never marries. Nancy MURRAY of Fletcher, Oklahoma, dies there on the 18th of April, 1917. She is buried at Elgin, but later removed to Lawton, Comanche County, Oklahoma, because the cemetery at Elgin is neglected. In 1939, Elias orders tombstones for the graves of his father and two little sisters back in Georgia. The stones are erected by NEAL MONUMENT COMPANY of Blue Ridge, Georgia, with the help of Dallas WOODY (a relation of the PETTY family) and Willy Lee Pritchett, the grandson of W.S. MURRAY.

One other son who is never mentioned in census, at least by the name we know, is "Gains" MURRAY. Gains has a son named Jim, whose picture is found among Vera (SMITH) MURRAY's pictures. The caption says that he is the son of Gains, "Will's half brother." Will would be the younger William, Nancy's son, who moved to Oklahoma. This would make Gains the son of W.S. MURRAY and his first wife, Caroline. 

Winfield Scott MURRAY has been a difficult individual to research. It took many years of research to put together this skimpy biography, and we still know nothing about his parents. What we know of the children of his first marriage is vague--we only know what we have pieced together from census and from that one photo caption of Jim MURRAY. We do feel that Winfield Scott MURRAY may turn out to be related to the Buncombe County, North Carolina line of MURRAYs. However, we have no real documentation as yet--just circumstantial pointers.

Any and all information on Winfield Scott MURRAY, first wife, Caroline, or their children would be greatly appreciated.

 

Detailed Biography: Winfield Scott Murray

Winfield Murray married Nancy Petty, daughter of Elijah Petty, on 1 July 1866 in Blairsville, Union County, Georgia. The marriage is recorded in a book that records marriages from 1866 to 1874. They are couple number 339 in that book, and appear as W.S. Murry and Miss Nancy Pettey. (Source: Georgia's Virtual Vault: Marriage Records from Microfilm. Digital page 9.) Nancy MURRAY appears on a list of charter members of Salem Number One church in Fannin County.

Scott and Nancy Petty Murray in Census...
1870 finds Scott MURRAY and Nancy PETTY together in census for the first time. One child, Georgia MURRAY, born in 1869, is dead by 1870 and does not appear in census. The only proof that we have of Georgia's life is a tombstone erected by Elias Andrew MURRAY, and a niece who was named "Georgia," probably after this child. Scott, Nancy and children live next door to Nancy's father, Elijah PETTY. He and his family moved into Georgia from North Carolina between 1850 and 1860. Also in Scott's household is Milton MURRAY, an unknown relation. Possibly, he is Scott's son from the earlier marriage. If so, he was mentioned by a different name in the 1860 census. The fact that one of Scott's children was named "Raphala" (Raphael?) does point to a possible affinity for classical names in this family. Sarah MURRAY makes her first appearance in the 1870 household, too. William "Will" MURRAY, five months old, shows up here, too. Since there was another William in the 1850 household of W.S. and Caroline MURRAY, it is possible that the first William died young.

Winfield Scott Murray dies...
Winfield Scott MURRAY dies in 1877, as does his child, Dovie MURRAY, who was born in 1875. They are buried at Sugar Hill ~ Salem Number One, in Dial, Fannin County, Georgia. Dovie does not appear in any census. The widowed Nancy MURRAY is still in Fannin County in 1880. She is 38 years old and has five of her children at home: Sarah, William, Alice, Mary Jane, and Andrew. Also living in the household is Nancy's sister, Sarah PETTY, a housekeeper. Nancy purchases land in Murray County, Georgia in 1885. 1900 finds Nancy and family in MURRAY County, though Mary and Elias (Andrew) are the only offspring left in her home. Sarah and Alice have married by now. William, too, is out of the household, though it is unknown where he is and whether he has married already. Milton, the unknown relation, is also gone, never to be heard from again, apparently. We do find a mention of a Milton MURRAY in North Carolina, who serves in the Union Army during the Civil War; it is unknown if that is the same Milton MURRAY.

Chronology and Household Composition

1850 Union County, Georgia: W. S. Murray and Caroline are in Union County, Georgia.

Elsewhere: Elijah Petty and his second wife, Sarah (Parker), with daughter, "Nancey," age 8 (who is to become W.S. Murray's second wife), are still in McDowell County, North Carolina in 1850. Elijah and Sarah had only recently married. Nancy is the child of Elijah and first wife, Letty Lewis.

1854: Fannin County, Georgia is formed. The new county is formed from sections of Gilmer and Union Counties.

Caroline is now gone from the household, probably deceased. William, Raphala, James, and the male infant of the 1850 household are not enumerated here, unless they are listed under different given names. Robert is now aged 16. A new female child, Martha, appears here. Various young Murrays do appear in other Fannin County households in 1860, with families named "Brown," and "Murray." It is unknown if they are any relation to W.S. Murray.

Elijah Petty and wife, "Sallie," with Nancy, aged 18, are now in Fannin County (Stockhill Dist., p.1069, dwelling no. 713).

1877: W.S. Murray died. He is buried at Sugar Hill/Salem #1 in Fannin County, Georgia. Near him are two children's graves with matching markers: Dovie Murray and Georgia Murray. [A letter in possession of the Murray family, written by Bruce Neal of Neal Monument Company in Blue Ridge, Georgia, to E.A. Murray of Fletcher, Oklahoma, confirms that in 1939, E.A. Murray ordered stones for W.S. Murray and two others.] Also near W.S. Murray's grave is another grave with a hand-carved natural stone showing "R.F. Murra."

Various siblings of Nancy Petty live nearby, including Daniel Petty next door. Elijah Petty (Nancy's father) and his family are on page 6, dwelling no. 51. David Pritchett, whose son, Stephen T. will later marry W.S. and Nancy's daughter, Alice, is on page 17, dwelling no. 146. (There is an error on David's middle initial, though, which should be "W" instead of "T."

1881: Elijah Petty dies. His will, probated in Fannin County, Georgia, mentions Nancy C. Murray as a legatee.

9 November 1885: Nancy Murray buys land in Murray County, Georgia. [Deed Book T, page 419: S.E. corner of land lot no. 168, sold by John R. Harris; transaction witnessed by W.D. Petty.] An old land map of Murray County shows "Mrs. Murray" on land lot 168.

On the above roster, parents of all individuals are designated as being born in NC. Nearby is David W. Pritchett and family; included in his household is his grown son, Stephen with wife, Alice (Murray) Pritchett and their three children.

Before 1910: Nancy moves to Oklahoma. In the 1910 census, Nancy is gone from Murray County, Georgia. We know from various family sources that she moved to Oklahoma to join other family members who had moved out there.

In addition to the children mentioned in the various census, W.S. Murray and his first wife, Caroline, had a son named "Gains." Gains Murray had a son named "Jim Murray." Several of the children from the first two census listings are possibly enumerated under various names, making it look as if there were more children than there probably were.

Marriages of Nancy Petty Murray's Children

Sarah Lou Murray married Andrew Greenville Pullen. They resided in Murray Co., Georgia.

William E. Murray married Ninnie Snider. They resided in Fannin Co., Georgia and Oklahoma.

Alice Safronia Murray married Stephen Thomas Pritchett. They resided in the Hall's Chapel area (near Crandall) of Murray County, Georgia.

Mary Jane Murray never married. She resided in Fannin Co., Georgia and Oklahoma.

Elias Andrew Murray married Vera Smith of Texas. They resided in Comanche Co., Oklahoma.

Annie Emmaline (Lackey) Caylor

 

Annie Emmeline (Lackey) Caylor

Annie Emmeline Lackey was born 4 May 1845 in Lincoln County, North Carolina, to William and Martha (Weir) Lackey. The Lackey family apparently moved to Georgia between 1848 and 1850. This was during the early period of Murray County's settlement by white homesteaders, most of whom came from East Tennessee, North Carolina, and other parts of Georgia. Annie Emmeline Lackey married Levi Caylor, of Tennessee, in Murray County on 10 September 1865. Levi, born 1 February 1843, was the son of William Aaron and Rhoda Jane (Dunn) Caylor.

Levi Caylor owned land in northern Murray County. He owned all or part of lot 88 in the tenth district, third section, of Murray County,* which was largely populated by Caylors, Headricks, Dunns, Lackeys, and other folks, mostly from East Tennessee. He and Emaline had these children: Eliza, William Robertson, Mary M., John Calvin, Martha Frances, James Wesley, Julia Ann, Henry L., Rhoda Elizabeth, and Ruth Clara Caylor. There were also some infants who died.

Annie (Lackey) Caylor died on 19 November 1901, probably in Murray County, Georgia, and is buried at Calvary Baptist Cemetery as "Ann Kaylor."** Her husband, Levi Caylor, died 14 September 1914 in Varnell, Whitfield County, Georgia, and is buried at Calvary Baptist Cemetery in Murray County, Georgia as "Levi Caylor."

Hazel Bloodsworth + Charles E. Whitaker:  exact date of marriage not known, but would be before 1952; and ID of groom is iffy (probably is the Charles Eugene Whitaker killed in action in Korea in October 1952). Their son, Charles Eugene Whitaker, Jr., was born in 1952 according to his own marriage doc., which lists Charles Eugene Whitaker and Hazel Bloodsworth as his parents. Other evidence of the marriage and correct ID of the bride exists: 

By the time Hazel married John Milton Holtzclaw, Jr., in 1953, she was going by the surname of Whitaker. These surnames are tied together showing the probably relation of one woman as the wife of (1) Charles Whitaker;  (2) John Milton Holtzclaw; and (3) Hugo Juarez.

Notes, conclusions: Alline apparently married Hugo Juarez Aragon. The marriage is evidenced in secondary documents, obituaries, and tombstones, but record is not noted (not yet found?). Hugo Juarez Aragon's stepdaughter shares a tombstone with him. Her name is Mary Florence Williams. Note further avenue of research: Mary's mother is probably Allene/Arlene (Bloodsworth) Juarez, wife of Hugo Juarez. Hazel apparently had an earlier marriage to a David Lewis Williams; possibly, this is the origin of the Williams surname for that child; no other evidence, just a coincidence of surnames. No access to birth or death records; researchers should check all possible records before accepting conclusions!

Evidence of bride's ID: Alline's tombstone under the Aragon surname has a birth year that matches Hazel Alline Pollard/Bloodsworth of Alabama, and since Hugo Aragon has a stepchild named Williams (fitting into the marriage framework of the Alabama marriage of Hazel Alline Pollard and David Williams), it seems to fit the Alabama woman. See marriages. The wife in this marriage has other husbands documented along with the Aragon surname, in the following indexed obituary, which shows that Hazel went by: Aragon, Holtzclaw, and Whitaker (apparently, judging by the names of the children and the corresponding marriages of Hazel; other marriages probably exist, but still trying to make sure it's the same Hazel Arlene/Allene of many surnames). Note: Apparently Hazel moved from Alabama to Texas. She seems to be the niece of a Hazel A. Bloodsworth in Texas (namesake or error?).

Personally appeared before me, L L Cochran Judge of Probate in and for said County, Peter Cooper who, being duly sworn, deposeth and saith that when a Private in Company B of 6th Regiment of Georgia Infantry and while in the discharge of his duty, on the 5th day of April 1862, at Yorktown in the State of Virginia he lost his left leg; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 25th day of February 1887, and is a resident at the date of this application; that he is engaged in the business of farming; and that his taxable property does not exceed one thousand dollars in value.

Sworn to and subscribed before me this 6th day of June 1887.

Introduction

Jane Blevins Cooper
Jane Blevins of Sand Mountain, Alabama, married Isaac Cooper. They had William Cooper, who was the father of Peter Cooper (born May 9th, 1843). Jane's husband, Isaac, fought in the Mexican Wars and died in the service of his country. Jane applied for pension based on Isaac's service.

A researcher once told me, jokingly, that Jane and Peter Cooper must have been some piece of work. "They applied for everything coming and going," she said. To me, the pensions tell another story--one of government red tape. It must have been difficult for poor Jane, Isaac's widow, to constantly worry over getting her meager pension reinstated. Every time it needed renewal, she had to gather proofs, bring together witnesses, and beg for legal assistance in getting the letters written--only to have the government lose them, apparently--so that she had to do it all over again. All this, she did for the sake of a houseful of kids--including her grandchildren.

Billy Eugene Wilson, born in Lewis County, Tennessee, lived in Michigan, and moved to Georgia.

Billy Eugene Wilson was born 17 January 1932 in Hohenwald, Lewis, Tennessee, to parents, Grove Cleveland and Emma (Staggs) Wilson. He moved to Michigan at age twelve. There, he applied for his Social Security card. At the age of 18 (about 1920), he joined the U.S. Air Force. (His last enlistment was on 10 Sep 1970). He was career military, retiring from the Air Force on 30 September 1972. His rank was MSGT. After retiring, he and his family moved to Riverdale, Clayton County, Georgia. He took a post as letter carrier for the U.S. Post Office, retiring from East Point Post Office in 1993. He died in Riverdale, Clayton, Georgia, on December 8, 2002. His remains were cremated, with plans for later burial in the Veterans Cemetery in Cherokee County, Georgia. He was survived by his wife, Della Iona (Olson) Wilson, several children, a brother and two sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Thomas M. Calloway married Mary W. Long, (Cuthbert), Randolph County, Georgia

Search for Thomas Merrill Calloway and wife, Mary Warthen Calloway, who received a deed of gift of land in Murray County, Georgia, from Thomas's uncle, James H. Calloway (apparently of) Fulton County, Georgia. (28 January 1876, Deed Book N, pages 79-80, Murray County Georgia, Superior Court records):

Apparently, "Warthen" is not Mary's maiden name, but is her middle name. Family research shows that "Warthen" was her mother's maiden surname.

Marriage Documentation:

Thomas M. Calloway married Mary W. Long, 31 Jan 1864, Randolph County, Georgia. (Family researchers, unspecified, have stated that the marriage occurred in Cuthbert, Georgia, which is in Randolph County).

Links to two records for (apparently) two different persons named Elisha Bryant (one Confederate, one Union). These records probably relate to two different individuals, unless it is the case of a conscript who deserted and joined the other side, which did happen with many East Tennessee and North Georgia Rebels.
