Chronology and Household Composition

1850 Union County, Georgia: W. S. Murray and Caroline are in Union County, Georgia.

Elsewhere: Elijah Petty and his second wife, Sarah (Parker), with daughter, "Nancey," age 8 (who is to become W.S. Murray's second wife), are still in McDowell County, North Carolina in 1850. Elijah and Sarah had only recently married. Nancy is the child of Elijah and first wife, Letty Lewis.

1854: Fannin County, Georgia is formed. The new county is formed from sections of Gilmer and Union Counties.

Caroline is now gone from the household, probably deceased. William, Raphala, James, and the male infant of the 1850 household are not enumerated here, unless they are listed under different given names. Robert is now aged 16. A new female child, Martha, appears here. Various young Murrays do appear in other Fannin County households in 1860, with families named "Brown," and "Murray." It is unknown if they are any relation to W.S. Murray.

Elijah Petty and wife, "Sallie," with Nancy, aged 18, are now in Fannin County (Stockhill Dist., p.1069, dwelling no. 713).

1877: W.S. Murray died. He is buried at Sugar Hill/Salem #1 in Fannin County, Georgia. Near him are two children's graves with matching markers: Dovie Murray and Georgia Murray. [A letter in possession of the Murray family, written by Bruce Neal of Neal Monument Company in Blue Ridge, Georgia, to E.A. Murray of Fletcher, Oklahoma, confirms that in 1939, E.A. Murray ordered stones for W.S. Murray and two others.] Also near W.S. Murray's grave is another grave with a hand-carved natural stone showing "R.F. Murra."

Various siblings of Nancy Petty live nearby, including Daniel Petty next door. Elijah Petty (Nancy's father) and his family are on page 6, dwelling no. 51. David Pritchett, whose son, Stephen T. will later marry W.S. and Nancy's daughter, Alice, is on page 17, dwelling no. 146. (There is an error on David's middle initial, though, which should be "W" instead of "T."

1881: Elijah Petty dies. His will, probated in Fannin County, Georgia, mentions Nancy C. Murray as a legatee.

9 November 1885: Nancy Murray buys land in Murray County, Georgia. [Deed Book T, page 419: S.E. corner of land lot no. 168, sold by John R. Harris; transaction witnessed by W.D. Petty.] An old land map of Murray County shows "Mrs. Murray" on land lot 168.

On the above roster, parents of all individuals are designated as being born in NC. Nearby is David W. Pritchett and family; included in his household is his grown son, Stephen with wife, Alice (Murray) Pritchett and their three children.

Before 1910: Nancy moves to Oklahoma. In the 1910 census, Nancy is gone from Murray County, Georgia. We know from various family sources that she moved to Oklahoma to join other family members who had moved out there.

In addition to the children mentioned in the various census, W.S. Murray and his first wife, Caroline, had a son named "Gains." Gains Murray had a son named "Jim Murray." Several of the children from the first two census listings are possibly enumerated under various names, making it look as if there were more children than there probably were.

Marriages of Nancy Petty Murray's Children

Sarah Lou Murray married Andrew Greenville Pullen. They resided in Murray Co., Georgia.

William E. Murray married Ninnie Snider. They resided in Fannin Co., Georgia and Oklahoma.

Alice Safronia Murray married Stephen Thomas Pritchett. They resided in the Hall's Chapel area (near Crandall) of Murray County, Georgia.

Mary Jane Murray never married. She resided in Fannin Co., Georgia and Oklahoma.

Elias Andrew Murray married Vera Smith of Texas. They resided in Comanche Co., Oklahoma.

Oliver Huckabaa owned property in, and resided in, the 27th District, 2nd Section, of Murray County, Georgia, and later moved to Covington County, Alabama. His residence in Murray County, Georgia, is documented in the 1880 U.S. Census for that county. His residence in 1897, as Covington County, Alabama, is documented in an 1897 quit-claim deed for property in Murray County, Georgia. The deed was filed by him in Covington County, Alabama, the place of his current residence, in 1897, and later recorded in Murray County, Georgia (the residence of his daughters, Ansela Headrick and Ersula Dunn) in 1901. These relationships of father to daughters are stated in the deed as well.

Oliver Huckabaa is listed in census in Covington County, Alabama, in 1900. The two daughters and their husbands are listed in Murray County, Georgia, that same year.

Note the occupations: Father and one son are plasterers. Another son is apprenticed to a gilder. The occupations can be helpful when trying to distinguish between other persons in the same town, who are similar in name and age to the family being researched. Second Family of William Jasper Herren

William J. Haren married (2) Emma (Babb) Linticum, on 05 December 1876, Greene County, Tennessee. Emaline "Emma" or "Emily" Babb was the daughter of Alfred and Mary "Polly" (Kidwell) Babb. Emaline's first husband was John D. Linthicum, but there is no evidence that she ever lived with him. She may have. The two married in 1876, but about two weeks after the marriage, they show up in census in separate households--she, with her parents (but under her married name); and he, with a family by the name of Hughs. They are listed on the same census page, but in separate households.

The errors in the 1900 census listing led to some confusion over the dates of marriage and the names of the wives. However, looking at the complete picture, the two marriages are recorded, and the deaths of each of the wives are established by good records. The names of the couple are established by their listings in the children's death records. While each of these records have minor discrepancies, there doesn't appear to be time between marriages for an extra marriage for William (to another Emma of a different birth date). Because of the good documentation from census, marriage, and death records, there doesn't seem to be much possibility of a lineage error (based on incorrect identification). The most likely explanation for the discrepancy in 1900 census is that the head of household, an elderly man by then, just made a mistake and gave his first wife's anniversary and date of birth.

The divorce record references the earlier marriage of the couple in Russell, Virginia, about 1810; and lists as a complaint that William Prince had taken up with a mistress, Arty Mullins (estimated about 1827-1828), and had two children by her.

Census Searches with Surname Errors. Mcallister / Mcallester example.

This is the first of what I hope will be many discussions of research problems. Those brick walls of genealogy!

I do my searching on FamilySearch.org, Google, and various state and library databases, but feel free to try any search engine you like. I've had pretty good success in finding my misspelled, erroneously listed relatives, many of whom told little white lies about their ages, because, what the census taker doesn't know, won't hurt him, right? ;-)

I've worked out a lot of tricks to use on the search engines, but it's not an exact science for me. I am methodical up to a point, but I never can stick to a list, or think of every conceivable variation. I often get side-tracked, and sometimes even wind up tracking down someone else's line, just for the fun of untangling their briar patch, or breaking down their brick walls. I feel I do it pretty well.

Today's misspelling really shouldn't have presented much of a problem, but it certainly did. It took me over an hour to find this relative, and I did get side-tracked.

Margaret McAllister, born 1929 in Georgia, was my "known" quantity. Her parents were Charles Clifford McAllister and Nancy Clemmie Green. I expected to find them in Catoosa or Walker County, Georgia. Here are some of the things I tried...

I started out with Margaret Margret Maggie Mattie (given-name field); "McAllister" in the surname field; 1927-1934 in the year-of-birth field; "Georgia" in the birthplace field; and "Catoosa, Georgia" in the residence field. I also put in the parents' names (without the mother's maiden name). I got nothing. I quickly dropped some specifics, and searched for the same name in Georgia and in Tennessee (North Georgia people often end up in East Tennessee). I still couldn't find her, and tried widening the birth range, dropping the parents' names, then the birth state, and finally the residence. I then varied the residence (places where I thought they might have lived briefly). I even dropped the state.

For surname variations, I began with wildcards: "Mcalister," "Mcall*r" and "*lister." I must have left out "Mca*r," because it seems to me it should have come up at the top of the list, unless the extra "t" in "Margarett" stumped the search engine. My broadest search (surname of "Mc*" with no birth state or residence) was just useless. It brought up thousands of records, including some in the Midwest who looked like twins of this Georgia family, and some in  Pennsylvania, North Dakota, and other places I would never expect to find them. Some were such mismatches I had to look back at my wildcards to find out why I was finding such oddballs.

I saved my broadest search for last, because putting in the wildcard surname of "Mc" brought up a tremendous lot of results, even with the county in there; and "*ister" brought up quite a few as well.

I tried again using "Mc,*" but narrowed down the places again: birthplace of Georgia, residence of Catoosa, Georgia. That was the search that worked. Even so, it brought up a lot of results (because so many surnames start with "Mc." I had to scroll through pages of results to find them. Here's what I finally found:

US Census, 1930, Militia District 0930, Catoosa, Georgia: Margarett Mcallester, female, aged 1 10/12, daughter of Clifton C Mcallester (and wife, Nancy). Birth: [est. June 1928; indexed as 1929], Georgia. Date of Census Enumeration: 21 April 1930.

It appears that the age, birth state, and residence were not the problems in this frustrating search, but the misspelled surname of "Mcallester" and the wrong given name on the father "Clifton C" instead of "Charles Clifford" caused a lot of trouble! The search for "*ister" was a good try, but missed "Mcallester" because of the "e." I don't know if the extra "t" in Margaret messed anything up. I may have used "Marg*" at some point.

Each census year has its own search problems, due to the different ways the indexes were compiled, and I will discuss some of those problems later. I hope that some of my successes will inspire someone else and help tear down that brick wall!

Each census index seems to have its own quirks. I think the 1860 census can be searched for county as well as state. Sometimes the less you fill in the blanks, the better. Some of the indexes, for instance, will fail to return an existing result if you have too much data input (such as sex, gender, etc.) It just depends on how they've indexed that particular census. Using a date range for the age is best. (Instead of birth, 1838, use birth, 1835-1840, etc.; ages in census vary so). DO NOT put names in the relationship fields for 1850, 1860, and 1870 (such as the field for "mother," "spouse," etcetera). Those census years do not recognize relationships of persons in the household. Instead, use the "other person."  A word to the wise: these indexes are rife with transcription errors, so be creative with your wildcard searches. For example, on "Headrick" surname searches, I always try: Hedrick, Headrick, He*ck, *drick, H*drick, etc. I vary input, such as "H*drick" (in the surname field) and "Blount," "Tennessee" for county and state; then remove the county if I'm not getting the right results. I have tried searches for the first name, county, and state (without the surname). It usually returns too many results, usually, but not always, and it can help find someone whose surname is badly misspelled. I've rarely tried this, but it might work: become familiar with common transcription errors. The transcribers often have trouble reading the old-fashioned script and cannot tell "s" from "l"; or "r" from "s," "n," etc. Capital "T" with a flourish is often transcribed as "P." Thus, "Thomas," as obvious as that seems to the descendant, might be transcribed as "Phomas."

1870 is one of the worst census years to search. It doesn't state relationships, and FamilySearch does not have it indexed by county. Therefore, adding the county doesn't weed out the results at all. Searching for "Headrick" of "Blount, Tennessee," will turn up all Headricks in Tennessee. It may also turn up "Hedrick," (common alternates), but not "Haedrick" or "Hadrick" or "Hetrick." But for what it's worth, I sometimes find it easier to search census straight from the collection, not from the main page at FamilySearch. Here's the page for 1870 Census Search:
