Here are some more views of the old family photo of Isaac Cooper and his wife, Mattie Jane Emaline Wigley Cooper, of Long Island, Jackson County, Alabama. I believe these images were scanned straight from my negatives by ScanCafe. Previously, I uploaded copies which had been scanned from my printed photos. There is a notable difference in the color. These (from the negatives) have much better color and clarity. I've also included a copy of the photo as it actually was, with the couple together. That's the best shot of it that I have. I was able to get better focus on each face by taking shots of half the photo at a time.

Drusilla Catherine Headrick, born 10 1861 in Murray County, Georgia, was the daughter of William and Mary Comings (Emert) Headrick. She married first, John Keith, in Bradley County, Tennessee, and later, Samuel W. Grigsby, in Murray County, Georgia. She never had any children, but she and Sam raised Sam's nephew, Walt.

Drusilla was my father's beloved "Aunt Sis," a great aunt. Daddy and Lois (Headrick) Cox, Uncle Horace's daughter, were the only ones who ever mentioned Aunt Sis to me, as far as I can recall. They both loved her. Apparently she was a kind old woman. I believe she made a dress for Lois once, maybe many clothes.

We have an old photo of Aunt Sis. In it, she is very old and wise looking. She is sitting with her niece, Alice (Headrick) Burns, my Granny's older sister. Alice is in an old ladder-back chair and is leaning over with her arm around Drusilla. It is the photo of a loving niece, and I can almost feel the kindness and protective instinct of Alice toward her old aunt.

The photo above is retouched (manually, by me), but I'm providing copies the raw, damaged photos below for documentation and comparison. The speckling over Alice's eye in the damaged photo was caused by my original retouch years ago, an attempt with a pencil on the original photo. The actual photo just has white spots where the glossy/image layer of the photo is just gone.

I plan to do a few more posts about Drusilla Headrick.

I first published the photo and documentation on my website, Southern Muse. I also shared it on FamilySearch (to be picked up by Ancestry, of course), and am reposting it here. My reasons are that I fear a site-hosting fiasco as Yahoo switches over to Aabaco Small Business. God forbid that I should lose Southern Muse after all these years, but it could happen. I can't imagine trying to transfer that large, cumbersome, disorganized site that I've built to a new host, if it should come to that. I'll just try to salvage a few gems ~ among them, Drusilla.

Isaac Cooper married Mattie Jane Emaline Wigley on 9 November 1902 in Trenton, Dade County, Georgia.

Isaac, born 29 March 1879 in Alabama, was the seventh son of Peter and Malinda (Sizemore) Cooper, who married on 28 August 1864 in Dekalb County, Alabama. Mattie, born 14 September 1886, was the daughter of James Marion and Mary E. (Bryant) Wigley, who married on 23 December 1880, in Dade County, Georgia.

The Coopers settled near their people in Long Island, Jackson County, Alabama. Isaac and Mattie had one stillborn son (later named Isaac, Jr.); and three daughters, Rosie Elizabeth Cooper, born 15 May 1906; Pearl Ellen Cooper, born 7 February 1908; and Sally Bell Cooper, born 16 July 1910. Mattie died on 18 June 1911 in Jackson County, Alabama, when her daughter, Sally, was just a baby. Mattie had never been well since the baby was born ~ she had a hole in her bladder. Isaac was a farmer. One day, while he was gone, Mattie found that there was going to be bad weather. She hurried out to try to get the crops in. This destroyed her health, and shortly after that, she died. Mattie is buried at the old cemetery in Island Creek Cove, Jackson County, Alabama.

Isaac remarried, first to Clarancy Cleo Colvin; and, after she died, to Estelle Higdon. He had six children by each of his other wives: sixteen children in all.

Isaac Cooper lived on the bluff in Long Island, Alabama. Some of his people, and the Wigleys, lived down in the cove. Later, he lived in Bridgeport (or the area came to be called Bridgeport). Cleo's half-brother, Mark ("Bean") lived with him for many years. Later in life, Isaac moved in with his daughter, Sally (Cooper) Bryant, in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. Finally, he moved into a nursing home. Isaac died in Collinsville, Dekalb County, Alabama, on 18 May 1977. He is buried at Sequatchie Valley Memorial Cemetery, Jasper, Marion County, Tennessee.

The photo of Isaac and Mattie (above) is a double portrait. However, I could not take it out of the frame, and could not get both faces into focus at once; therefore, I photographed each face separately and put the two images together. The original photograph belonged to Sally (Cooper) Bryant.

My other image file was scanned by ScanCafe, possibly straight from my negative. The color and clarity is a little better in the newly uploaded shots:

Mary Lizzie Dove (Pritchett) Carter, my great-aunt, lived in Chatsworth, Murray, Georgia. She took a trip to Oklahoma to see her Murray - Petty relatives out there, and I think this picture was taken during that trip. I remember hearing Aunt Dove tell about when she was young and had to pick cotton. She could pick eighty pounds a day... awfully hard work! I love this picture ~ I think it's my favorite picture of her.

Nancy (Petty) Murray

Nancy Petty married Winfield Scott Murray of Union County, Georgia. After Scott's death, Nancy is found in Fannin County, and later, in Murray County, Georgia. Some time after 1910, Nancy moved, with her grown sons and daughter, to Oklahoma. This wonderful photo shows Nancy with Elias & Jane (her offspring) on a farm northeast of Elgin, Okla. in 1916. This photo was migrated from my old Family Tree Maker site, Families of North Georgia and Alabama ~ so this is the best quality digital image I have of it right now. One day, I'll try to do a new, larger scan from my hard copy.
