Personally appeared before me, L L Cochran Judge of Probate in and for said County, Peter Cooper who, being duly sworn, deposeth and saith that when a Private in Company B of 6th Regiment of Georgia Infantry and while in the discharge of his duty, on the 5th day of April 1862, at Yorktown in the State of Virginia he lost his left leg; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 25th day of February 1887, and is a resident at the date of this application; that he is engaged in the business of farming; and that his taxable property does not exceed one thousand dollars in value.

Blancit Clerk of the County Court in and for the County and State above named, the same being a Court of Record, personally appeared Jane Cooper aged 66 years, a resident of Marion County in the State of Tennessee who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the identical Jane Cooper who was a pensioner on the roll of the agency at . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . and whose Pension Certificate is herewith returned: . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . that she has resided since the first day of January, 1861, as follows: near [Steven?] Alabama an sinc that time & now Resides as above stat~d that during this period hir means of subsistence have been by living with her children and friends and that she has not borne arms against the government of the United States, or in any manner encouraged the rebels, or manifested a sympathy with their cause: and that she was last paid her pension on the 4th day of September A.D. 1860
      This application is made for the purpose of securing a restoration of her name to the pension rolls, and of obtaining a new pension certificate, such as she may be entitled to under existing laws, reference being made to the evidence heretofore filed in the Pension Office to substantiate her original claim, and hereby constitutes and appoints TUCKER & SELLS, of Washington, D.C., her Attorneys to prosecute the claim and procure a certificate, with power of substitution, and revokes and countermands all former authority that may have been given for the above specified purpose.

INSTRUCTIONS.

    The declaration must be made before a judge, Clerk or Deputy Clerk of a Court of record.
    If the declarant, or any witness, signs by mark, the officer must certify that the contents of the paper were made known to the affiant before signing. In every case the declaration or affidavit must either be signed by the affiant's own hand or else by mark (X). Signing by another hand when the party is able to write, or without a mark when unable to write, is not admissible.
    If the applicant be an invalid pensioner, he must be examined by an Army Surgeon or by an Examining Surgeon appointed by the Commissioner of Pensions, as to the continuance of his disability, unless the disability is of a character to continue permanent, such as a loss of a limb: which should be stated in his declaration. If a widow, she must prove by two credible and disinterested witnesses, her continued widowhood. If the guardian of a minor child, newly appointed, he must file evidence of his appointment as such.

I certify that Jane Cooper, widow of Isaac Cooper, who was a private of company D, Georgia mounted volunteers, in the service of the United States, is entitled, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved June 3, 1858, to receive pay at the rate of Three dollars and Fifty cents per month, to commence on the Twenty-fourth day of December 1857, and to continue during life, unless she should again marry, in which case the pension is not payable after the date of such marriage.

Personally appeard before me Mark Hale a justice of the peace within and for the County and State aforesaid duly authorised by Law to adminster oaths. Jane Cooper aged fifty five years a Resident of the County of Dade & State of Georgia and Post Office of Rising Fawn. Who being duly sworn according to Law declares that she is the widow of Isaac Cooper Deceased who was a privet soldier in the Company D Commanded by Captain William D Fullton in the Regiment of Georgia mounted volunteers Commanded by Col- Calhoun in the War with Mexico and died on the twenty third day of December 1847: and that she is the identical Person who Drew a pension under the act of congress. the 5th of February 1853. at the Rate of three Dollars and fifty Cents pr month. Commencing on the Twenty fourth day of December 1852 and terminating on the Twenty fourth day of December 1857: at Mobile by Jas. Perrine agent for paying pensions in the agency of Alabama. That she now makes this affidavit for the purpose of obtaining the benefit, of the said act of Congress of June 3d 1858 that she has not intermarried but continues to be a widow that she now Resides in the County of Dade and State of Georgia and hir Post office is Rising Fawn and has Resided there for Two years Past Previous there to she Resided in the State of Alabama & County of DeKalb

Introduction

Jane Blevins Cooper
Jane Blevins of Sand Mountain, Alabama, married Isaac Cooper. They had William Cooper, who was the father of Peter Cooper (born May 9th, 1843). Jane's husband, Isaac, fought in the Mexican Wars and died in the service of his country. Jane applied for pension based on Isaac's service.

A researcher once told me, jokingly, that Jane and Peter Cooper must have been some piece of work. "They applied for everything coming and going," she said. To me, the pensions tell another story--one of government red tape. It must have been difficult for poor Jane, Isaac's widow, to constantly worry over getting her meager pension reinstated. Every time it needed renewal, she had to gather proofs, bring together witnesses, and beg for legal assistance in getting the letters written--only to have the government lose them, apparently--so that she had to do it all over again. All this, she did for the sake of a houseful of kids--including her grandchildren.

On this 18th day of July, A. D., 1864, personally appeared before me Charles Morrow, a Justice of the Peace a Court of Record within and for said county, Mary J. Headrick, aged 24 years, a resident of the 1st District, in the county of Blount, and State of Tennessee, who, being first duly sworn according to law, doth, on her oath, make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862: (2)_____: That she is the widow of Peter Headrick, who was a Private in Company "I", commanded by Captain F. D. Felkerson, in the 5th Regiment of Tennessee Infantry, commanded by Col. James T. Shelby, in the war of 1861. (3)_________. That her said husband was killed in battle of Resacca, in the state of Georgia, on the 14th of May A. D. 1864 (4) ______ while in the line of duty in the service of the United States.
She further declares that she was married to the said Peter Headrick in Blount County, on the 27th day of November A. D. 1854, by one David Spradling, a Justice of the Peace; that her name before her marriage was Mary J. Moses, and that ever since the death of her said husband, she has remained a widow: as will more fully appear by reference to the proof annexed (5) which is a copy of the public record of their said marriage it being the best evidence she can offer of said fact. That during the existence of the aforesaid marriage there were born to her and her said husband the following named children, who are now under the age of sixteen years, viz: Jacob, born the 1st day of Sept. 1858; Samuel born the 20th day of February 1861 all of whom are still living, and reside in Blount County Tennessee.
She also declares that she has no manner been engaged in, or aided or abetted, the Rebellion in the United States.
She further says that her Post Office address is Knoxville Tenn.

Enlisted as a private in Company G, Second Michigan Cavalry Vols, Hillsdale, Michigan. Promoted to Corporal, was a division scout. Wounded, shot in left knee by rebels during a scouting expedition from Cleveland, Tennessee, into northern Murray County, Georgia. Cared for by Polly Headrick (widow of old Jacob Headrick). Left leg amputated by surgeon. Robert McDougall survived the war and later married Agnes P. McDougall on 3 September 1867. He and his family later resided in Monrovia, California.
