Hazel Allene Bloodsworth, Hazel Arlene Bloodsworth Research Notes

Research: Aragon, Bloodsworth, Holtzclaw, Whitaker, Williams

Sources, analysis, notes. There is room for error; descendants should check further for birth, marriage, and death sources.

Hazel Bloodsworth + Charles E. Whitaker:  exact date of marriage not known, but would be before 1952; and ID of groom is iffy (probably is the Charles Eugene Whitaker killed in action in Korea in October 1952). Their son, Charles Eugene Whitaker, Jr., was born in 1952 according to his own marriage doc., which lists Charles Eugene Whitaker and Hazel Bloodsworth as his parents. The bride is Gloria Dianne Fuller. Source: Alabama County Marriages, 1809-1950.

Other evidence of the marriage and correct ID of the bride exists:

By the time Hazel married John Milton Holtzclaw, Jr., in 1953, she was going by the surname of Whitaker. These surnames are tied together showing the probably relation of one woman as the wife of (1) Charles Whitaker;  (2) John Milton Holtzclaw; and (3) Hugo Juarez.
*Source showing all names in relation to survivors: obituary of John Milton Holtzclaw III.

Whitaker-Bloodsworth evidence: Evidence for the ID of wife's name is found in son's marriage doc.: Alabama County Marriages, 1809-1950: Charles Eugene Whitaker, male (husband of Hazel Bloodsworth); listed in source as father of the groom (of same name as the father), Charles Eugene Whitaker (born 1952; marrying Gloria Dianne Fuller).

Whitaker-Holtzclaw Marriage
Hazel Arlene Whitaker married John Milton Holtzclaw, Jr. Marriage: 10 February 1953, Wichita, Texas, United States

Note misspelling in index: John Milton Holtgdaw Jr married Hazel Arlene Whitaker on 10 Feb. 1953 in , Wichita, Texas. [Note indexing errors to wit: that the marriage date comes before the license date in this index; seems illogical and non-typical; also, groom's surname should be Holtzclaw]. Source: John Milton Holtgdaw Jr in the Texas, Select County Marriage Records, 1837-2015. No Image; text-only collection.

Name: John Milton Holtgdaw Jr. Gender: Male. License Date: 11 Feb 1953. License Place: Wichita, Texas, USA. Marriage Date: 10 Feb 1953. Marriage Place: Wichita, Texas, USA. Spouse: Hazel Arline Whitaker. Document Number: 00013675. Source Citation: Wichita County Clerk's Office; Wichita Falls, Texas; Wichita County Marriage Records; The Book Series: ML; Volumes: 00036; Pages: 0278. Source Information: Ancestry.com. Texas, Select County Marriage Records, 1837-2015 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations, Inc., 2014.

Holtzclaw, Record of Divorce: May 1955, Russell, Alabama, United States. Source: Hazel A Holtzclaw in the Alabama Divorce Index, 1950-1959. Spouse 1: Hazel A Holtzclaw. Gender: Female. Spouse 2: John M Holtzclaw. Gender: Male. Divorce Date: May 1955. County: Russell.

Source Information. Ancestry.com. Alabama Divorce Index, 1950-1959 [database on-line]. Provo, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2006. Original data: Alabama Center for Health Statistics.

Notes, conclusions: Alline apparently married Hugo Juarez Aragon. The marriage is evidenced in secondary documents, obituaries, and tombstones, but record is not noted (not yet found?). Marriage: 12 October 1954, Guadalupe, Texas, United States (source for marriage date not stated; if correct, it precedes bride's Alabama divorce from Holtzclaw, 1955? Need marriage source).

Hugo Juarez Rene Aragon's petition for naturalization: Wife: Hazel Arlene Bloodsworth Aragon. Source: Texas, Naturalization Records, 1852-1991 for Hugo Juarez Aragon, Austin Naturalization Petitions, 1955 - 1957. Petition for Naturalization No. 2449.

Hugo Juarez Aragon's stepdaughter shares a tombstone with him. Her name is Mary Florence Williams. Note further avenue of research: Mary's mother is probably Allene/Arlene (Bloodsworth) Juarez, wife of Hugo Juarez. Hazel apparently had an earlier marriage to a David Lewis Williams; possibly, this is the origin of the Williams surname for that child; no other evidence, just a coincidence of surnames. No access to birth or death records; researchers should check all possible records before accepting conclusions!

Evidence of bride's ID: Alline's tombstone under the Aragon surname has a birth year that matches Hazel Alline Pollard/Bloodsworth of Alabama, and since Hugo Aragon has a stepchild named Williams (fitting into the marriage framework of the Alabama marriage of Hazel Alline Pollard and David Williams), it seems to fit the Alabama woman. See marriages. The wife in this marriage has other husbands documented along with the Aragon surname, in the following indexed obituary, which shows that Hazel went by: Aragon, Holtzclaw, and Whitaker (apparently, judging by the names of the children and the corresponding marriages of Hazel; other marriages probably exist, but still trying to make sure it's the same Hazel Arlene/Allene of many surnames). Source for family ties: John Milton Holtzclaw III in the U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current.

Note: Apparently Hazel moved from Alabama to Texas. She seems to be the niece of a Hazel A. Bloodsworth in Texas (namesake or error?).

Obituary of John Milton Holtzclaw III (indexed): John Milton Holtzclaw III in the U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current U.S., Obituary Collection: John Milton Holtzclaw III, male, deceased (aged 62). Birth: 21 Jun 1953, Williamson, GA. Residence: Asheboro. Death: about Dec. 2015 or Jan. 2016. Death Place: Winston-Salem. Burial Date: 3 Jan 2016.

Mother: Hazel Aaragon. Spouse: Mary Holtzclaw. Children: Bryan Holtzclaw,  Helen Holtzclaw Davis.

Siblings: Paul, Pat, and Joe Aaragon; Charles Whitaker; Brenda, Mary, and Gladys Bailie; and Liza King.

Find A Grave Index 83494974, Fort Sill Post Cemetery, Fort Sill, Comanche, Oklahoma, USA: Hazel Arlene Aragon. Birth: 05 Apr 1922. Death: 05 May 1984. Also, in same cemetery: Mary Florence Williams, 'Stepdaughter of Hugo Aragon.'

TRANSCRIPTION NOTES:
Document is highly illegible and difficult to decipher due to ink bleed-through and smudges. I deciphered some words by context, which fits the typical legal-clerical language. The marriage date is very "iffy," especially the month, which looks like "J~~~y." Blevins' surname is illegible on the signature. His seal is a circular squiggle. George White's seal looks like a "JP" with the "P" being a big circle.

Jane Blevins Cooper Pension Files

This post will remain in progress while I migrate the Jane Cooper pension-file transcripts from Southern Muse to North Georgia Kin. Later, I will provide links to the various pension files!

Introduction

Jane Blevins Cooper
Jane Blevins of Sand Mountain, Alabama, married Isaac Cooper. They had William Cooper, who was the father of Peter Cooper (born May 9th, 1843). Jane's husband, Isaac, fought in the Mexican Wars and died in the service of his country. Jane applied for pension based on Isaac's service.

A researcher once told me, jokingly, that Jane and Peter Cooper must have been some piece of work. "They applied for everything coming and going," she said. To me, the pensions tell another story--one of government red tape. It must have been difficult for poor Jane, Isaac's widow, to constantly worry over getting her meager pension reinstated. Every time it needed renewal, she had to gather proofs, bring together witnesses, and beg for legal assistance in getting the letters written--only to have the government lose them, apparently--so that she had to do it all over again. All this, she did for the sake of a houseful of kids--including her grandchildren.

Listed below are links to the pension documents of Jane Blevins Cooper. If you have access to the actual documents, please notify me of any errors that you find.

Jackson County, Alabama, Township 2-S, 6-E (Selected Landowners: Bryant, Gray, Blanset, Wigley, Morgan, Colvin)

Page of old notes about Township 2-S, Range 6-E, Huntsville Meridian
in Jackson County, Alabama; and random notes on other townships.
In transcribing old genealogy files, I found this old page of my scribbled notes on land lots for my Bryant and Gray families of Jackson County, Alabama, and on allied or married lines, such as the Colvin and Blanset families. Unfortunately, my notes were completely out of context, and had nothing to tell me what sources I used, or what dates were relevant. I didn't even put the county and state on there, but the noted surnames told me that it must be Jackson County, Alabama. I vaguely remembered traveling to a genealogy workshop to learn about ancestors by studying maps and land-lot descriptions. The theme of the workshop turned out to be the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), and how to read and understand land descriptions, find meridian, identify a township, and plot the sections. Right away, I was disappointed to learn that if I was from Georgia or Tennessee (and I am), the workshop probably wouldn’t be of much use to me. As it turns out, these two states still use the metes-and-bounds survey system of colonial days, and the workshop instructor laughingly explained that it was a crazy and impossible system. Deeds in Georgia and Tennessee describe land in this manner: “…beginning at a point thirty rods from a white oak, continuing ten rods to a large rock, and thence 20 rods north to a public road, then east along Muskrat Creek to the northwest corner of the property belonging to Mrs. Murray, bounded on the east by D. Boone, and on the west by John Johnson…” I always wondered: what do they do when the white oak dies?

I still found the workshop interesting, and was able to use some of my new-found knowledge in my Alabama research. Apparently I used a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) index for Jackson County, Alabama, and tried to plot a chart from that index. I have since found a separate text file, which is an extract of names from the Huntsville Meridian. A few of the range numbers do not correspond correctly to the information in the index. I don't know if I mapped them incorrectly, or if the people bought land in more than one range. I probably drew the grid wrong, so that the section is right, but the range may be disproportionate. It still helps me see which of my people lived next to each other.

The large diagram in my chart, above, is of Township 2-S, in the Huntsville Meridian (as I now know). Originally, I thought all of the land lots fell into Range 6-E, but (judging from the separate text file), it appears to include several adjacent ranges. At the top of my diagram are three sections of Township 1-S, which abuts 2-S on the south. I probably did that because a James Morgan appears in Twp. 1-S, 6-E, section 35. My Coopers have a few Morgan relations, so I would have been interested in looking up these neighbors. I also drew a little diagram in the bottom left-hand corner to remind myself how Township 2-S relates to meridian, and how the lots are numbered in the township. I then drew another little graph in the bottom-right corner of the page, but unfortunately did not make a legend to explain my shaded areas. That small graph doesn’t seem to correspond to the larger graph, of Twp. 2-S. It may be a graph of section 6-S, 8-E, possibly related to a note about the Gray surname that I wrote under it. A word of caution: I remember that the PLSS workshop and the explanation of finding meridian and working from there was a wonderful revelation to me, and perfectly clear at the time—but by the time I set down the graph and began to chart the landowners from the Land Office index, I was a little less sure of my understanding of the subject. Also, the list of landowners is probably incomplete—it would only include surnames of interest to me, with a few unrelated neighbors thrown in.

Here are the landowners I noted, from Townships 1-S and 2-S—probably an incomplete list, concentrating on my own ancestral surnames and a few of the neighbors:

Jackson County, Alabama (Huntsville Meridian)

Township 1-S, Range 6-E? (three sections), noting selected name and surnames:

  • Section 34: Culver, Knight, and Matthews
  • Section 35: Allen Matthews; James Morgan
  • Section 36: no surnames, or none of interest to my lineage

Township 2-S, Originally Thought to be Range 6E (This may incorporate several ranges, since the range numbers don't all correspond to the separate text file at the bottom of this post):
  • No surnames noted for sections 1, 2, 11, 12, 13, and 16?
  • Section 3: Allison, Culver, Kellum, Orear
  • Section 4: Wm. Troxell; Jeremiah Walker
  • Section 5: Jeff Gray [this would be my great-great grandfather, Jefferson Gray, who married Nancy Howard]; Crook, Kirk, McCrary, Walker (neighbors, unrelated)
  • Section 6: William E. Bryant [Bryant is one of my surnames. My new thought, looking back on this old note, is that William E. Bryant might possibly be another name for, or a relation of, Elisha Bryant, another great-great grandfather. Elisha’s son, Charlie Bryant, married Jefferson Gray’s daughter, Mary Smith Gray—so it would make sense that they might be neighbors. Elisha’s daughter, Mary E. Bryant, married first a Wigley, then a Blanset. Some Blanset land is found in the next township down, 3-S.
  • Section 7: Allen Bryant; Goin Morgan [?as in original, but could they mean “Gain” or “Gains”?]
  • Section 8: Collins, Dockery, Ivy, Mathews, Mathis [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 9: Jonathan C. Walker; Jasper Gray [Jasper Gray would be related to my Grays]
  • Section 10: Allison, Brandon, Gentry, Isbell, Kellum, Owens [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 14: Jos Collins
  • Section 15: Goin Morgan; Mary Wiggley [Mary Wiggley is Mary (Bryant) Wigley, daughter of Elisha Bryant. She married first James Wigley, and then John Blanset. I do recollect that the BLM records had one notation or application under Mary Wigley, and another under Mary Blanset, which was very helpful at a time before I could find documentation for the Wigley-Blanset marriage, that I knew should exist. I later found it, and think that it had gone unrecorded in the courthouse until the issue of the land may have come up. It was found out of sequence in the marriage books: Marriage Book D, Dade County, Georgia,  (January 1899 through July 1913), p.253, John "Blansit" married "Miss" Mary Wigley on 30 Dec 1898. The license was granted the previous day and the marriage was performed by J.L. Hadaway, M.G. Although Mary is listed as "Miss," she should have been "Mrs.," having been married previously to J. Wigley. The Blanset-Wigley marriage was not recorded until 1906.]
  • Section 16: No notations, unless Mary Wiggley’s land extends across the two sections
  • Section 17: Alexander, Mathews, Siler, Priestwood [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 18: James Collins; Goin Morgan
  • Section 19: James Walker
  • Section 20: Alexander, Lamb, Siler; Thomas Priestwood [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 21: Alfred Howard; James Wooten; Alford Howard [possibly related to my Howards; of interest to me]
  • Section 22: Austell, Foshee, Howell, Lovelady, Wilson [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 23: Coffey, Howell, Lovelady [no surnames from my line]
  • Section 24: Bird; Eli Coffee, etc. [surnames of passing interest to me]
  • Section 25: Joseph Thornton
  • Section 26: Charles Moore; Andrew H. Moore; John S. Burks [possibly related lines]
  • Section 27: John Bryant [Bryant surname of Alabama: esp. relevant to my research]
  • Section 28: John A. Bryant; Jos. Morgan; John Bryant [esp. relevant to my research]
  • Section 29: Wm. Walker [not really relevant, but I often copy down stray Walkers; the surname is relevant to my paternal line, in East Tennessee and North Georgia]
  • Section 30: Wm. Thornton
  • Section 31: [?] James & Franc. [?] Not sure what this means; to the left, outside the grid, I’ve written “Wm. E. Clemens” and “Dora B. Clemons,” and what looks like two lines connecting them to the land grid. Possibly, James and Franc. are of the Clemens surname.
  • Section 32: James Gray [probably of my Gray/Howard/Bryant line]; Dora B. Clemens; Wm. E. Clemens
  • Section 33: Wm. Jenkins; Sam. Bryan
  • Section 34: Geo. R. Burks and Sarah Edwards; John S. Burks [lines to study—possibly branch relations]; also, Wm. Morgan et. al.
  • Section 35: John S. Burks
  • Section 36: Hancock, Sisk, Rorex, etc. [unrelated lines]

Notes for Townships not shown in my graphs/charts; sections not given:

Township 1-S, 7-E: Walker, Weaver [unrelated, but interesting in paternal line, because of surname only]

Township 1-S, 8-E: Troxell

Township 1-S, 9-E: Bryant, Adkins [possibly related or branch kin]

Township 3-S, 8-E and 7-E: Moore, Blanset, Blansett, Bryant, Lewis, Clemons, Gray, Millikan, Thornhill, Thornton [surnames of interest, including some possible branch kin]

Township 12-S and 13-S: Has Colvins (Alfred), a lot of land [Note: Colvins are of interest in my Cooper line; my great-grandfather’s first wife was Mattie Wigley, but his second wife was Clarancy Cleo Colvin.]

Township 3-S, 9-E

  • Section 13: Nancy A. Morgan [prob. related/of interest in Morgan/Cooper lines]
  • Section 28: James M. Pritchett [popped out at me—surname of interest in a general way]

This is a partial index from the Bureau of Land Management records (BLM), and it seems to be what I used to draw the rather faulty graph at the top of this post. Some of the names and section numbers do correspond with the above graph of Township 2-S, but the ranges do not all fall into range 6E, which I originally thought to be the Range for the whole graph.

Isaac and Mattie Jane (Wigley) Cooper (II)

Isaac and Mattie (Wigley) Cooper

Here are some more views of the old family photo of Isaac Cooper and his wife, Mattie Jane Emaline Wigley Cooper, of Long Island, Jackson County, Alabama. I believe these images were scanned straight from my negatives by ScanCafe. Previously, I uploaded copies which had been scanned from my printed photos. There is a notable difference in the color. These (from the negatives) have much better color and clarity. I've also included a copy of the photo as it actually was, with the couple together. That's the best shot of it that I have. I was able to get better focus on each face by taking shots of half the photo at a time.

Richard Sizemore Will, Transcription

Here is his will transcribed by dkp (thanks to Winona Jones of Weatherford, Tex. for a copy of the original):

Georgia. Dade County. In the name of God, Amen. I, Richard Sizemore of said state and county, being of advanced age and knowing that must shortly depart this life, deem it right and proper both as respects my family and myself that I should make a disposition of my property with which a kind providence has blessed me; do therefore make my last will and testament hereby revoking all others heretofore made by same.

1st item. I design that my body be buried in a decent and Christian-like manner suitable to my condition in life. My soul, I trust, shall return to rest with God who gave it.

2nd item. I design and direct that all my just debts be paid without delay by my executors hereinafter appointed, as I am unwilling my creditors should be delayed in their right.

3rd item. I give, bequeath and devise to my son Andrew Jackson and Thomas Benton and James Clayton and my daughter Malinda Elizabeth part of lot of land number two hundred and nineteen in the eleventh district of formerly Cherokee, now Dade County, containing one hundred and ten acres with all the rights, members and privaliges (sic) to said lot of land in any wise appertaining or belonging forever.

4th item. I give and bequeath to my son John one sorrel horse and two cows and calves and their increase and six head of sheep and their increase, one yoak (sic) of stears (sic) and cart, one hundred bushels of corn and ten head of hogs, and one rifle gun, and three feather beds and furnature (sic).

5th item. I hereby appoint my son John executor of this my last will and testament this April 18th, 1850.
