Manning Burials (and Some Related) in West Hill Cemetery, Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia

Manning and Related Burials, Selected

West Hill Cemetery
Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia

Family Burial Plot of Alexander Manning and family is in Section M of West Hill Cemetery

MAP URL: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7681462,-84.9825923,17z

Section M is directly behind the fenced-in section that comprises the Confederate Cemetery (not designated on the Google Map). There are about 91 family plots in that section, each with room for five-to-twelve graves. Most are rectangular, about the size of a kitchen or small living room (about 12 x 15 feet). Corner plots are smaller. Most of the plots have graves, but are not full. The Manning family plot is a rectangular plot near the front/east side of Section M. It has only three marked graves in it, and a lot of unused plots. There might be at least one unmarked grave in it, not sure. The three marked graves are Alexander Manning, Reese Manning, and James W. Russell. There is an extra monument (cenotaph) for Alexander and Reese Manning.

Below is my map of the section just south of General Thomas Drive. General Thomas Drive continues east and ends at a point where it meets West Cuyler Street.

Section M has room for  I only saw one depression that might be an unmarked grave, but I'm no expert. In my opinion, there should be at least one more grave there -- that of Josephine Manning, whose name does not appear in the Whitfield County, Georgia, Cemeteries Book (compiled by Whitfield-Murray Historical Society), but it should. Josephine was listed as a widow in the 1920 census, and she still had the surname of "Manning." She died in Chattanooga on October 24, 1920. According to her obituary in the North Georgia Citizen (Dalton, Georgia), her body was brought back to Dalton for burial at West Hill Cemetery. The other grave sites are probably empty. William Felton Manning and wife, Myrtle, are buried in Section B (northeast of Section M, not shown on my map). Some of the family moved to Chattanooga and are buried there; and the rest moved on to Alabama and Arizona, and are buried in those states.

Find A Grave Memorial 104622843: James W. Russell (northwest corner of plot).

Find A Grave Memorial 50720422: Reese A. Manning (southeast corner of plot).

Find A Grave Memorial 50720329: Alexander Manning (possibly buried in southwest corner, marked by "Father.")

Cenotaph for Alexander and Reese A. Manning: southeast corner of plot, just north (to right) of Reese's grave. The cenotaph is shown on both memorials, 50720422 (Reese) and 50720329 (Alexander).

There are other Mannings buried at West Hill Cemetery, but not of this specific family group.

WHITE ROSE CEMETERY Recorded by John A. Scruggs June - July 2000
--------------------------------------------------------------------
White RoseCemetery is located southeast of Gibson, Tn. at the intersection of Gibson Cemetery Rd. and Dawson Bottom Rd.

Contributor's notes:
The White Rose Cemetery was first known as Pickettsville Cemetery. It is shown on an 1877 map of the area. The land was given by Gib  and  Becky  Johnson  to provide a place for human burial. The name was changed some time after the name of the community and town was changed from Pickettsville to Gibson.  The White Rose Cemetery Society came into existence in the late 1800's, @ 1895 it is thought. It was not until March 1979 that the first  bylaws  were  adopted. Membership in the Society is limited to individuals and their heirs who hold a deed to a burial plot on land owned by the Society. The bylaws state that  all
excess monies be placed in an insured interest bearing account for the perpetual care of the cemetery.  The  Cemetery Board of Trustees are very active, with quarterly meetings, as well as an annual meeting.

While doing the recording of this cemetery, I tried to think about how it would look on here, and the best way to present the information. So, this is what I came up with, the cemetery has four sections, with four drives dividing them, so I have lettered them A-B-C-D, and will list the names by rows, I think this will make it easier for someone to find a certain headstone that they want to see. See attached plot.

Each section was started in the lower left hand corner, two names with no spacing were on the same headstone
