Letter from Bruce Neal to Elias A. Murray, of Oklahoma (1939)

Winfield Scott Murray married (1) Caroline. Her last name is not known. She may be related to the Wrights, by evidence of an older woman by that surname, who lived in the Murray household in 1850, in Union County, Georgia. Winfield appears in census under the given names of Winfield S., W.S., and Scott. The surname is spelled various ways: Murray, Murry, and Mury. Winfield's second wife was Nancy C. Petty, daughter of Elijah Petty. They married on 1 July 1866, in Blairsville, Union County, Georgia, and are found in the 1870 census in Fannin County. Winfield S. Murray died in 1877 and is buried at Sugar Hill Cemetery, in Fannin County, Georgia.

Nancy (Petty) Murray and her grown children moved to Murray County, Georgia. Later, they left Georgia, probably between 1908 and 1910, and moved to Oklahoma. Nancy died in Fletcher, Comanche County, Oklahoma, in 1917, and is buried at Highland Cemetery in Lawton, of that same county.

When Elias got older, he began to worry about the unmarked graves back in Georgia, of his father and two little sisters, Georgia and Dovie Murray. He ordered some stones for the graves. Dallas Woody (son of Nancy's half-sister, Lydia), showed Neal where to find W. S. Murray's grave. Elias Murray had sent a plat showing the other two graves in relation to his father's grave. Willie Lee Pritchett, grandson of W. S. and Nancy (Petty) Murray, helped put up the stones. He wrote a letter to his uncle Elias, and enclosed it in Mr. Neal's letter. Below is the correspondence, sent to me by Lavita Murray, of Oklahoma.

William Stephen Pritchett (Bill Pritchett), of Crandall, Georgia - Biography

William Stephen "Bill" Pritchett was born April 13, 1930, in Crandall, Murray, Georgia. His parents were Arvil Henry Pritchett (son of Stephen T. and Alice Murray Pritchett) and Sudie Headrick (daughter of William "Bill" and Sarah Quincy Davis Headrick). Bill was an only child. His mother died of tuberculosis on December 17, 1913, when Bill was just a baby. Sudie's sister, Leona, married Arvil Pritchett's brother, James Walter, so she was Bill's aunt twice over. Leona was also to die of tuberculosis, just three years after her sister died. Like many men in Murray County, Bill's father was a farmer, and saw hard times during the Great Depression. At times, the family share-cropped, moving from farm to farm as the crops came in. Arvil Pritchett died in 1941, when Bill was ten years old, going on eleven. Bill lived with his grandparents, Stephen and Alice (Murray) Pritchett, for a time. Steve and Alice were kind-hearted people, and took in several of their grandchildren. Steve was a Kansas-born man, whose parents had moved from the North Georgia mountains to the midwest after the Civil War, but soon moved back to the mountains. In spite of the tragedy in his childhood, Bill had a positive outlook on life. He was a good story teller with a wonderful, hearty laugh. He was a truck driver. On days off, he liked to go fishing. He married Louise Harris, daughter of Thomas Rufus Harris and Sybil Frances Pullen (a Murray County couple, who had married there on May 25, 1931). Louise was born April 18, 1933, in the Temple Grove community of Murray County, Georgia, where she and her husband settled, raised a family, and lived until her death on May 24, 2009. The couple had three children, Sudie, Judy, and Timothy Pritchett. Bill was a good friend to his older cousin, Fred Thomas Pritchett, of Crandall, whose father, Willie Lee Pritchett, was a brother of Bill's father, Arvil. Fred and Bill were first cousins on the Pritchett side, and were third cousins on the Headrick side. Fred's father died when Fred was fifteen. Fred's mother was Esther (Headrick) Pritchett, daughter of William Abraham Lincoln Headrick. W.A.L. Headrick's father, William Matthew Headrick, was the brother of John Scott Headrick, Bill's great-grandfather. Bill Pritchett died in Dalton, Whitfield County, Georgia, on Friday, February 10, 2017.

Tornado of 1932, Murray County, Georgia

The tornado of 1932 was a huge storm system, killing about 175 people in Alabama and some in Georgia. Found several local articles.  Following are very brief extracts, along with publication information:

Microfilm roll:
The Chatsworth Times
April 1920-Dec. 1944

Article from:

The Chatsworth Times
Thursday, 24 March 1932
Volume 46--Volume 12*     (*This is a misprint:  normally it would say Vol. 46--Number 12, but I extracted "as is.")
Chatsworth, GA 30705

page 1--several articles, also cont'd on last page:

Headline: "Tornado Kills 6 In Murray County"

[Has three photos. Extract compiled from various articles]:

The tornado struck "last Monday night about seven o'clock..."

"Thirteen are dead in Murray and Polk county, Tennessee..."

"...the home of Conway Sampson was carried off by the winds."

Dead: [incl. Little Murray and Conasauga area]: George Awtrey (father-in-law of Mrs. Joe Awtrey), Willard Awtrey* (age 10, son of Mrs. Joe Awtrey), Marion Awtrey (age 8, daughter of Mrs. Joe Awtrey), Lynch Lauderdale, Mrs. Lynch Lauderdale, Miss Maggie Sampson, Mrs. J.B. Hawkins, Mr. Raymond Parks (alternately, "Ramon," of Tenn.), Mrs. Raymond Parks, Three Parks children, and Infant child of Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Green (which dropped from the mother's arms into the well as the mother tried to hold onto a well curb against which she'd been blown. Doctors think baby died before falling into well).

*"...Willard Awtrey, who later died of his injuries, gathered up cover from the fields with which to cover up his mother."

Badly injured:  Mr. and Mrs. Ratcliff, Mr. and Mrs. Sampson and Miss Annie Sampson and Dewey Sampson (hospitalized).  Also badly injured, Tinker Headrick and family, Mrs. Henry Caylor, Bud Horn, Mrs. Jim Kendrick, Mrs. and Mrs. Gilbert McClure.

[Transcriber's Note: By the way, I remember my Dad saying that Bud Horn was nearly blinded by ashes when the wind blew down into the chimney and blew the ashes into his face.]

Hurt or badly bruised: Mr. and Mrs. Winston Green, "three children who were at Ball Play," Henry Hawkins, Joe Sampson.

Areas mentioned (communities, towns or counties) in "the Conasauga River Valley":  Beaverdale (which is in Whitfield Co., Ga.) Little Murray (in Murray Co., Ga.), Conasauga (in Polk Co., Tenn.--near Cleveland, Tenn.)

Under subheading of: "Oak Grove School Wrecked" it mentions the Lauderdales (2nd paragraph of article):

"The home of Charlie Ratcliff was completely destroyed, even the concrete foundation was broken up and moved.  His daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Lynch Lauderdale, were killed.  Mr. and Mrs. Ratcliff are in the hospital."

Continuation and more articles on last page, including:

Subheading, "Funerals Wednesday":

Triple funeral: George Awtrey and his two grandchildren buried at Sumach Wednesday. Also, "Miss Maggie Sampson was buried at Old Fort and Mr. and Mrs. Lauderdale were buried at Liberty.  Mrs. Hawkins was buried at Calvary Thursday."

(Oops--I forgot to note the page number of that last page).
