Mrs. Eba Lawson of Eton, Murray County, Georgia, Dies on Train at Chattanooga, 1911

(Article in The Dalton Argus)

Mrs. Eba Lawson, of Eton [Murray, Georgia], who suffered from tuberculosis, was on her way to Texas for her health, when she died on the train. The death was discovered at Chattanooga. Mrs. Lawson was traveling with her two small children. The children were taken in charge by Mrs. Marshall, the police matron, and placed in the Vine Street orphanage, thence sent back to Dalton, where a Mrs. Evans kept them until Mr. Lawson arrived. Meanwhile, authorities had located Mrs. Lawson and notified him of his wife's death. The body was sent to Sharp's in Chattanooga, and was returned to Dalton.

Death of Will Wilbanks, of Eton, Murray County, Georgia

Will Wilbanks, son of Cas Wilbanks and a cousin of Sheriff Wilbanks, was a popular young man of Eton, Murray County, Georgia. He played baseball for the home team. In the summer of 1909, while playing at Fairmount, he was struck hard by a baseball, causing a wound which wouldn't heal. Over the next several weeks, the injury worsened and blood poisoning set in. Will Wilbanks died of blood poisoning, Tuesday, September 7, at the age of twenty-two. His story appears on the front page of The Dalton Argus, September 16, 1909.

Note: Fairmount is in nearby Gordon County, Georgia.

"D. C. Sutton Dead.
  "Macon, Ga., Aug. 16.—D. C. Sutton, aged 76, at one time editor of The Montgomery Monitor and a well known newspaper man throughout the state, died at the residence of T. E. Burch here yesterday morning. He had been in declining health two years or more and had spent his last days with Mrs. Burch, his daughter, who resides at 600 Main-st., East Macon. Mr. Sutton resided at Ellijay, Ga., some time before coming to Macon. He is survived by his wife and six children, one of them being Edward L. Sutton, now connected with The Atlanta Journal. The body was carried back to Mount Vernon this morning, where the funeral and interment took place."

Summary of Details (originating in Monday's Atlanta Constitution, republished in North Georgia Citizen): Morgan had been drinking, became despondent, said he was tired of life, complained of a violent headache (inferred, as an excuse to go to the store), bought 50 grams of morphine, took about 25 grams of morphine in front of a witness (14-year-old Harry McGuirk, his wife's cousin), told sister-in-law, Mrs. Crew, " 'I have gotten some morphine and have taken enough to fix me.' " Wife called Dr. Cox; nothing could be done; Morgan died two hours later.

"Miss May Jenkins, daughter of W. J. W. Jenkins, of near Rising Fawn, died Thursday night of last week from the effects of an overdose of laudanum. 

    "The young girl had been suffering from a toothache and upon retiring took the bottle of medicine to bed with her and it is thought she was holding the medicine in her mouth to ease the pain when she fell asleep and swallowed it. 

    "She had been attending a revival meeting at Byrd's Chapel and is said to have made a bright profession of faith in Christ on the night of her death. 

    "The remains were interred in the Baptist cemetery, Rev. J. C. Wagner of Rising Fawn conducted the funeral obsequies."
