Myrtle Rogers of Marion County, Tennessee

[Quote from Sequachee Valley News, 29 October 1896, Supplement, p.5]:

"Miss Myrtle Rogers is proving to be quite a valuable assistant postmaster."

Miss Brownlow Elopes

Article quoted from Barton County Democrat (Kansas), 1903:

Miss Brownlow Elopes with a Liveryman

Bristol, Tenn., Sept. 8.—Miss Cloyetta Brownlow, daughter of Congressman W. P. Brownlow, of Jonesboro, Tenn., eloped with Mark E. Pritchett, a liveryman, of Jonesboro, and they were married at Bristol. The attentions of Pritchett to Miss Brownlow are said to have been opposed by the congressman, hence the elopement. The young lady was a favorite in Washington social circles the past season.

Luther G. Hensley Corcoran, L. G. or Elgie Cochran, of Tennessee

Research on Luther G. Hensley Corcoran, also known as L. G. or Elgie Corcoran, sometimes written as Elgie Cochran. He was the son of Patrick William Corcoran and Emeline Amanda Alley, and the husband of Mary Jane Martin. He was a resident of Columbia, Tennessee.

Obituary Reference: "Kills Woman Then Himself: Elgie Cochran, Former Columbian, Principal of a Double Tragedy," in the Daily Herald, 27 Dec. 1905, Birmingham, Jefferson, Alabama (page not listed; probably page one).

Elgie Cochran shot his mistress, then himself. The obituary said that he was boarding with Mrs. Johnson, a woman of means; the article also referred to her as a "grass widow" (that is, a mistress, or a divorced woman who lives with a man other than her husband). Earlier, Mrs. Johnson had been complaining that Corcoran had taken to drink again. An argument probably ensued. Later, Corcoran killed her, then killed himself. His body was shipped from Birmingham, Alabama, to Rose Hill Cemetery in Maury County, Tennessee, for burial.

Coyle Research, Tennessee and Georgia, Various Documents

Lord, I think I am crazy.

I found where I had posted this on my Little Scraps of Paper (the blog where I put everything from my "To-Dos" to the local pizza-place number, because businesses in Eton, Georgia, nearly always have a Chatsworth mailing address for their physical address. First, I thought I had probably posted on Little Scraps instead of North Georgia Kin; maybe I just forgot to toggle the drop-down thingy. Then I wondered, "Who the heck is Ella Goad Coyle, anyway?" And I can't remember. Dang, that's just five months ago! But, I've slept since then, and I do so much genealogy.

Now, I can remember my main lines, and even a lot of secondary lines, but quite often I find myself working on lineages whose surnames are just completely unrelated. Sometimes, it's because I'm trying to untangle somebody's mess on Family Search, to "unmerge" him from our guy and re-create him, using documentation, as their guy (for example, when somebody foolishly merges John Smith, born 1799 in England, with John Smith, born 1854 in Tennessee.

Anyhow, after looking this over and realizing I don't even recollect why I was researching the Coyles, and realizing most of these clips are my own extract of document images, I decided to pop them on here. It might be helpful, not only to someone who is researching these people, but also to anyone who's trying to determine if there's a method to my madness. In these clips, I seem to be talking to myself, bouncing ideas off myself, and giving myself little to-dos and reminders of potential clues to research further. So, here goes Coyle....

Various Coyle Records

Tennessee Deaths, 1914-1966, Reg. no. 862, Reg. Dist. no. 801, Stamped (State/Cert?) no. 6498: Benjamin E. Coyle, aged 71 years, 2 months, 3 days, married white male, deceased; resided at 647 Kent st, Memphis, Shelby, Tenn. Birth: 29 Dec 1872 (place unknown). Death: 2 March 1944, St. Joseph Hospital, Memphis, Shelby, Tennessee. Length of Stay in Hospital: Suddenly. Length of Stay in Community: 30 yrs. Wife: Mrs Odie L. Coyle (age not stated). Occupation: Carpenter. Social Security Number 412-09-8623. Informant: Mrs B. E. Coyle, of 647 Kent st. Burial: 6 March 1944, at Mem. Park (?Memorial Park?), Memphis. Undertaker: National Funeral Home, Memphis, , Tenn. (Signatures of various officials). [Extract by D.K. Pritchett, FamilySearch contributor.]

Death no. 50-13121: Ella Goad Coyle, aged 80, widowed white female, deceased; resided for 30 years in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee (residence at time of death: 2510 E 18th St). Occupation: Domestic housewife (in) Own home. Birth: 21 Jun 1870, Tennessee, US. Death: 21 Jun 1950, Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee. Father: Henry Goad. Mother: Elizabeth Cagle. Informant: Mrs A W Klein, of Chattanooga. Burial: 24 June 1950, Forest Hills, Chattanooga, , Tenn. Funeral Director: National Fnl, Chatta. [Extract by D.K. Pritchett, Family Search contributor.]

United States Census, 1880, Dalton, Whitfield, Georgia: Horace Coyle, aged ?0? (maybe 0, maybe a fraction); single male, grandson of Benjamin Coyle. Birth: 1880, Georgia. Both parents born in Georgia. Also in the household, Sallie Coyle, 16-year-old single daughter of Benjamin Coyle, who appears to be ill due to "Labor" ("Labor" is written in the column for sickness). Enumeration Date: 14 Jun 1880.

Checking Two Benjamin Coyles as Possible Duplicates

I think these are duplicates, but I would like to do more research before merging. [Here I was talking about a potential merge of two possibly duplicate Person IDs (PIDs) on Family Search (FamilySearch.org), I know]. The reason this looks pretty good as a match: both men were carpenters (the first one, listed that way by 1910, though he had started out in other jobs). Both men were born in Georgia, but later moved to Tennessee. There do not seem to be any census conflicts, so far; that is, when one is found, the other isn't; and vice versa.

(1) Benjamin Coyle (PID L1PX-XQV) married Mary Ella Goad/Goode, 22 May 1892, Whitfield, Georgia; probable parents of Elizabeth Coyle Klein, since she was born in Dalton. He is probably the one we've attributed as residing 1880 in Dalton, Whitfield, Georgia, but is too young to have an occupation at that time. In 1900, he is a sardine packer. By 1910, he is a carpenter in the contracts industry.

(2) Benjamin Coyle (PID LBVT-CT1) married Odie Livingston, 31 March 1914, Shelby, Tennessee. Listed as a carpenter (self or own account) in 1917 (draft reg.), 1920, 1930, 1940, and 1944 (death record).

Harvey Coyle was born 1897, Rome, Ga., to Ben and Ella Coyle (per marriage record in 1919, Kentucky). Census shows that he has a sister named "Lizzie" Coyle, born about 1905, a good fit for Elizabeth Coyle Klein; she is probably "Mrs. A. W. Klein," the informant on the death record of Ella (Goad) Coyle, a "widow" who died in 1950 in Hamilton Co., Tenn. (but she was probably divorced; in the old records, many divorced women called themselves widows). Ella Goad/Goode is a good fit for the Ella Goode who married Benjamin Coyle on 22 May 1892, Whitfield, Georgia, US. Per census, Harvey and Lizzie had another brother, Flave Coyle (full name researched as Flave McCurry Coyle). Flave's death record gives his father as Ben Coyle, born in Ga. It gives his mother's birthplace as Ga., but the name of the mother is unknown. (this could be that Flave's mother was out of his life by the time he married; his wife was the informant on his death record, I think). Flave later drove a truck in Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee.

This all fits, so far: Ben was in Dalton, Whitfield, Georgia, in 1880, with parents; he married Ella Goad in 1892 in that county. In 1900, he was in Rome, Floyd, Georgia, with wife, Ella, and the first three children. (The records of some of the children show that they were born in Rome or lived there early on). The family apparently moved to Chattanooga, Hamilton, Tennessee, between 1904 and 1907. Later records of some of the children have Hamilton Co., Tenn., in them.

That's all, and I'm not sure if I actually did make the determination to merge these or not. But, anyway, here she is on North Georgia Kin. "One Less Thang" on Little Scraps, thank you Forrest Gump. So I can clean up that other blog.

William Henry Harrison Hayes "Bill" Dunn, of White County, Tennessee (lived there all of his life)

William H. Dunn's parents, according to his Social Security Application, are Stanfield Dunn and Mandy Smith. That application gives his birth as 10 April 1869, Cookeville, , Tennessee (yet Stanfield Dunn and Mandy Smith were not married until 1879 (ten years later), according to the marriage index. On William's death record, with his wife, "Lular Dunn" as informant, his birth is 1871 and his parents are Stanfield Dunn and Amanda White. It is not unusual for an in-law to mix up her mother-in-law's maiden name, but she would likely know her husband's parents. Note that all of these people seem to have been born and lived for decades in White County, Tennessee, NOT Murray County, Georgia. (That is a terrible mix-up on Find A Grave; DNA should help prove it, if family members are tested). William does not appear with his parents in the 1880 census, unless he is the same person as James H. Dunn, which he could be (because James disappears later on). From 1900 on, Census has William's birth as Dec 1874, 1873, 1867, 1878, and finally, 1871. Then his tombstone has 1871. I've never seen such a broad range of error on a year of birth. I think that James H. Dunn, born Sep. 1879, could be the same child as William H. Dunn. It would explain a lot! See Social Security Application: William H Dunn in the U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007. [Did he lie about his parents on his Social Security Application? Did his wife lie about his parents in his death record? Or is this just a simple error on the year of birth? I think it might be the latter.] U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 (no image ; text-only collection).

Reverend Benjamin M. Devault and Wife, Mattie Hyath, of East Tennessee

United States Census, 1910, Civil District 2, Knox, Tennessee, ED 103, Sheet 4 B, House no. 613, Dwelling 86, Family 87, Line 98: Benjamin Devault, aged 51, married white head. Birth: 1859, Tennessee. Both parents born in Tennessee. Occupation: Minister. Married once (M1). Married 14 years (est. 1896). Wife is Mattie DeVault (mother of 4 children, 2 living). Children in the household are John Devault, born 1898 in Kentucky; and Frank DeVault, born 1900 in Missouri.

The Reverend Benjamin M. DeVault was born about 1860 in Sullivan County, Tennessee, and is probably related to other DeVaults there. He married Mattie Hyath, of Campbell County, Tennessee (though no marriage record has yet been found; the couple may have married in Kentucky). Mattie had four children. Two of them died. The ones who lived were John DeVault, born 1898 in Kentucky; and Frank DeVault, born 1900 in Missouri. Reverend Devault and his family apparently moved, at least temporarily, from Tennessee to Kentucky, to Missouri; then to Knox County, Tennessee (where they are found in census in 1910). About 1910, apparently after census, they moved to Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, where their son, John, died that year. They probably lived there until at least 1918, when son, Frank, register for the World War I Draft, and listed Benjamin (of the same address) as his nearest relative. In 1923, Benjamin and his wife, Mattie, moved to Winter Park, Orange County, Florida. This move may have been made for Mattie's health, for she died in Orlando about five days later, according to her death record. Benjamin continued to live in Winter Park, dying there in 1925. He and his wife are buried at Palm Cemetery in Winter Park, Orange County, Florida. Both husband and wife are exceedingly hard to find in census, though another Benjamin DeVault, of the same age, is sometimes found in Sullivan County, Tennessee (but he has a different wife and children). There may have been name changes; or it may be that Benjamin, as a minister, travelled from town to town or went on missions. Little else is known about this East Tennessee family.

William Jasper Herren and Family, Greene County, Tennessee

First Family of William Jasper Herren

North Carolina, County Marriages, 1762-1979: Dorcus A. Morgan, female; listed in marriage to William J. Herrin. Marriage: 02 Nov 1857, , Mcdowell, North Carolina, US.

United States Census, 1860, Buncombe, North Carolina: Dorcas Haren, aged 22, female, listed in the household of Jasper Haren. Birth: 1838, North Carolina. Also in the household: Zeb Haren, infant male. Date of Census enumeration: 23 July 1860.

United States Census, 1870, District 12, Greene, Tennessee, (Archival Stamp 310), Sheet 17, Dwelling 118, Family 118, Line 23: Darkus Herren, aged 33, white female, listed in the household of William Herren. Birth: 1836-1837, North Carolina.

Find A Grave Index 39360725: Dorcas Haren. Birth: 07 Jul 1837. Death: 28 May 1876. Burial: 1876, Cross Anchor Cemetery, Cross Anchor, Greene, Tennessee, USA.

Second Family of William Jasper Herren

William J. Haren married (2) Emma (Babb) Linticum, on 05 December 1876, Greene County, Tennessee. Emaline "Emma" or "Emily" Babb was the daughter of Alfred and Mary "Polly" (Kidwell) Babb. Emaline's first husband was John D. Linthicum, but there is no evidence that she ever lived with him. She may have. The two married in 1876, but about two weeks after the marriage, they show up in census in separate households--she, with her parents (but under her married name); and he, with a family by the name of Hughs. They are listed on the same census page, but in separate households.

Citation for marriage of Emily Babb and John D. Linticum:
Tennessee, County Marriages, 1790-1950: Emaline Babb, female; listed in marriage to John D Linticum. Marriage: 18 Jun 1870, Greene, Tennessee, United States.

Citation for marriage of Wm. J. Haren and Emma Linticum:
"Tennessee Marriages, 1796-1950," database, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XD73-58S : 11 February 2018), Wm. J. Haren and Emma Linticum, 05 Dec 1876; citing Greene,Tennessee, reference ; FHL microfilm 944,387.

William and Emma Herren in Census:

United States Census, 1880, District 12, Greene, Tennessee, Supv. Dist. 1, E.D. 50, Sheet 28, Dwelling 246, Family 247: William J Herring, aged, married male, head. Birth: 1835, North Carolina, US. Date of census enumeration: 21 June 1880. Wife is Emmie Herring.

According to research based on studying the dates of marriage and years of birth listed for the children, the 1880 household has children from both of marriages.

United States Census, 1900, Civil District 12, Greene, Tennessee: William J Haren, aged, married male, head. Birth: Apr 1833, North Carolina. Married 42 years (est. 1858). Wife is Emily Haren (mother of 6 children, 6 living).

[Note: Apparently William has given his first wife's birth date and year of marriage in this census listing!]

Tennessee Death Records, 1914-1963: Emily Heren, aged 74 years, 1 day, widowed white female. Birth: 22 Aug 1849, Greene Co. [Tenn.] Death: 24 Aug 1923, Greene [Co.], Tennessee. Father: Alfred Babb, born in Greene Co., Tennessee. Mother: Polly Kidwell, born in Greene Co., Tennessee. Burial: 25 Aug. 1923, Oak Grove. Informant: W. S. Babb, of Greenville, Tenn. Undertaker: J.J. Mitchell, Greeneville.

Citation: "Tennessee Death Records, 1914-1963," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NSGH-7S9 : 25 May 2014), Emily Heren, 24 Aug 1923; citing  Cemetery, Greene, Tennessee, v 20 cn 258, State Library and Archives, Nashville; FHL microfilm 1,299,757.

Other Supporting Evidence:

The parents are listed in some of the children's death records:

Tennessee Death Records, 1914-1963: Deceased male, Zeb Glen Haren (born 23 Feb. 1880, Greene, Tenn. and died 21 Apr 1946 in Unicoi, Tennessee). Father: Jasper Haren, born in Buncomb, N.C. Mother: Emma Babb, female, born in Greene, Tenn.

Tennessee Death Records, 1914-1963: Nannie Leo Malone, aged 76 years, 4 months, 26 days, widowed female. Birth: 17 Sept 1877 (indexed as 1878). Death: 13 Feb 1954, Fall Branch, Washington, Tennessee (died at home; resided in Fall Branch for 20 years). Father: Jasper Haren. Mother: Emma Babb. Burial: 15 Feb. 1954, Babb Cemetery, Greene Co., Tenn. Informant: Mrs. Stella New, of Fall Branch, Tenn.

The errors in the 1900 census listing led to some confusion over the dates of marriage and the names of the wives. However, looking at the complete picture, the two marriages are recorded, and the deaths of each of the wives are established by good records. The names of the couple are established by their listings in the children's death records. While each of these records have minor discrepancies, there doesn't appear to be time between marriages for an extra marriage for William (to another Emma of a different birth date). Because of the good documentation from census, marriage, and death records, there doesn't seem to be much possibility of a lineage error (based on incorrect identification). The most likely explanation for the discrepancy in 1900 census is that the head of household, an elderly man by then, just made a mistake and gave his first wife's anniversary and date of birth.

Elisha Bryant: one Confederate, One Union (probably two different individuals, unless a conscript who deserted)

Links to two records for (apparently) two different persons named Elisha Bryant (one Confederate, one Union). These records probably relate to two different individuals, unless it is the case of a conscript who deserted and joined the other side, which did happen with many East Tennessee and North Georgia Rebels.
