One-Year Anniversary of Death of Col. R. J. McCamy, 1909

Illness (began, critical): Sun. afternoon, 23 Aug. 1908 

Death: 26 Aug. 1908

More: Parents moved to Murray County [Georgia] in  1830s (before the Cherokee removal); parents had ten children (three died as infants) 

Childhood: grew up in Murray County on father's farm.

Education:

Age 18: Entered Emory and Henry College; attended one year.

Age 19 (est.): Entered Hiawassee College; attended one year. Graduated, returning home just before Civil War (est. 1860-1861)

More: At Emory and Henry, McCamy met Col. Shumate, a professor there. (Shumate was another late, prominent local citizen, also being paid tribute; he had died a year before McCamy and McCamy had spoken at his memorial service; the men were often opponents in the courtroom.)

About or after 1865: studied law under Judge Dawson A. Walker, (Dalton, [Whitfield, Georgia])

Military: Was age 20 at beginning of War, in approx. 1861 

Subject, Col. Bob McCamy, Confederate. Assisted Capt. John Beck in raising company of volunteers and became a 1st lieutenant in the company ('This company was mustered into service where the Crown Cotton Mills now stand.'); critically wounded in leg at Battle of Malvern Hill, 1861 (talked surgeon out of amputating leg; was disabled about two years); rejoined command about 1865, just before Gen. Lee surrendered (no active service). He "stood along 'the last of the old guard' with Lee at Appomattox."

Employment:

(About 1861 or 1862 till approx. 1865, while recuperating from war wound), 'employed in the Comptroller-General's office at Milledgeville.'
