William 'Squirrel' Murray Biographical Sketch

William S. 'Squirrel' Murray was born in Tennessee. As a child, he moved with his parents to northern Murray County, Georgia, where his father worked in a shoe shop. William learned the trade of shoemaker and worked in that trade. In 1884, he married Elizabeth Cordwell in nearby Whitfield County. By 1893, he had opened his own shoe shop there, at Dalton. William and Lizzie had at least seven children. The family probably lived in or near a community called Fashion.

Somewhere along the line, Will or Bill (he went by both) picked up the nickname of "Squirrel." Besides being a shoemaker, Squirrel Murray was a writer-poet-philosopher, publishing a column in the Dalton Citizen. His writing was a mixture of humor,  poetry, and philosophy. He also took photographs for the paper. At the same time, ads for his shoe shop appeared in the paper. Squirrel was quite a character. In 1904, he took a shot at Bob Holland (a neighbor), but missed, owing to a policeman's intervention. The feud went back one year, though the cause is unknown. After that, mentions of Murray are scarce and discreet, though friends hoped he would start writing to the paper again. 

The family moved to Chattanooga. Squirrel and his wife were separated by 1910 (Lizzie reported herself as a widow). William died in Birchwood in 1942, and was buried at Silverdale cemetery, according to his death certificate. His daughter, Myrtle Barnes, was the informant.

Claiborne Tidbits of Social News, Tunnel Hill, 1890s

Charles T. Claiborne

Charles T. Claiborne, usually mentioned as C. T. Claiborne, had several ventures going in the 1890s. In 1893, he was working for Southern Bell Telephone Company. He had also started a nice hotel in Tunnel Hill. He was the proprietor. His wife and daughter helped run it. There were several little social tidbits (plugs) printed in the paper about the hotel, and a nice display ad. The Southern Bell job required Claiborne to be away from home a good bit, so perhaps his wife managed the hotel in his absence. He was still constructing telephones in 1900, as mentioned in census. He was in Atlanta by then.

1893: 

"Chas. Claiborne of the Southern Bell Telefone Co. is at home enjoying a short vacation."

Margaret Louvenia "Venie" (Davis) Claiborne

Venie was the first wife of Wesley Dickerson Claiborne. She died young. The marriage took place in 1890 near Tunnel Hill, Whitfield County, Georgia, and was published in the paper. By 1894, she and an infant child had died, and her husband remarried. This is mentioned in her husband's obituary. There are only a few mentions of Venie in the paper. So far, no obituary has been found. Here is a tidbit, mentioning her by her married name.

Death of Clayton Orr

Subject: Death of Clayton Orr

[Summary of article, with quotes]: Clayton Orr, a young widower employed by Crown Cotton Mills, fell or stepped off a moving train as it came into the station at Tunnel Hill, falling through a trestle. He died immediately, having broken his neck and crushed his skull. The train was a northbound Western and Atlantic bound for Chattanooga. Onlookers had seen him let go; some surmised that he meant to purchase a ticket at Tunnel Hill, inadvertently stepping off the platform while the train was still 'going at a rapid rate of speed.' He was killed on Saturday [estimate: 20 December 1913]. Funeral services and interment were Monday in nearby Dalton (Second Baptist Church, North Dalton; Rev. Joe Maples officiating; burial at West Hill Cemetery). Orr's wife had died 'a short time' previous to his fatal accident; and his father, Mr. Orr, had died in an accident at Tunnel Hill (being kicked by a mule) several years before.
