Assorted Social Notes From The Chatsworth Times

These are just tidbits from some old social columns in The Chatsworth Times. These were copied out because the families were of interest in my genealogical research. In most cases, the families are very specific to my line. In others, they are of related lines, or just matching surnames. The column headings refer to communities. Someone in the community wrote a note to the newspaper, as an update to community news. I've tried to quote verbatim, and to get all the dates and pages right, but these notes were scribbled in margins. There might be errors!

Front Page Story: Bond hearing on Ed Petty to be resumed in Dalton Dec. 15. Petty is charged with the murder of Jim Huffman at a still in the Ballground district. (Claims self-defense). Marion Milsap, a witness, is jailed for contempt.

"Mrs. Mary Walls died at her home on the 16th here instant." [...] ...two daughters, Misses Sudie and Mattie Lou Walls... two brothers (attended from a distance): Mr. John Walker of Rome, and Mr. George Walker of Atlanta. Two nephews: Sam Fincher and Mr. Walker of Atlanta.

[General notes from 1921 issues: Nena Petty is mentioned often, and is a cousin of Dove Pritchett. Beginning in April, Miss Emma Dalton and father, Mr. Dalton, start being mentioned and they visit Loda and Dove Pritchett, etc.]

Daws Knick pleads guilty to robbing Chatsworth post office (1912)

Daws Knick pleads guilty to post office robbery in a 1912 article:

 "...and the plea of guilty of Daws Knick, who acknowledged to robbing the Chatsworth postoffice.
  "Knick was sentenced to two years in the penitentiary, having also entered a plea of guilty to larceny. It is probable that the government will handle him for the postoffice robbery."

Daws Knick is probably one of two individuals:

(1) Dawson Walker Knick, born July 1864, Georgia, US; died 1942, Dalton, Whitfield, Georgia, US.

(2) James Dawson Knick (son of above), born October 1891, Georgia, US; died 11 May 1952, Whitfield, Georgia, US.

Chatsworth, Georgia: Genealogy Workshop At Library August 4th and 5th

The Whitfield-Murray Historical Society is partnering with the Chatsworth-Murray County Library to offer a FREE Beginning Genealogy workshop for area residents on Tuesday, August 4 and Wednesday, August 5.  The workshops will focus on research specific to Murray County and participants can attend either or both days.

Tuesday things get underway at 9 a.m. at the Library. 

The first hour will be spent discussing various local resources that could help researchers find more information about Murray Countians of the past--unusual, out-of-print, or unique publications in the collections of the Historical Society. The session will then move to the Murray County Courthouse where beginners will learn how to use the various public records available there. The session will conclude around noon.

Wednesday morning from 10-12 there will be a special session at the Library about using ancestry.com and internet resources for research.

Historical Society members Tim Howard and Marcia Kendrick will be leading the workshop.  The Library is located on Old Ellijay Road across from the Murray Medical Center.  For more information, contact the library at 706-695-4200.
