This Indenture made this 2nd day of April 1853 between Zoilus Bell of the one part and Jacob Hedrick of the other part both of the County and State aforesaid Witnesseth that Zoilus Bell has this day made and delivered to the said Jacob Hedrick his Certain promissory note Subscribed with his hand and [illegible] even Sale with these presents whereby the said Zoilus Bell

has promised to pay the said Jacob Hedrick or heirs the sum of fifty five on or before the fifteenth day of September ensuring the Sale here of for value Received Now for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars by the said Jacob Hedrick in hand paid at and before the Sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged as well as for the better securing the payment of the afore mentioned promissory note the said Zoilus Bell has granted bargained and Sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Jacob Hedrick his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the County aforesaid known as the South half of lot Number fifty sise of the 10 district & third Section containing Eighty acres more or less with all the rights members and appertenances to said lot of land in any wise belonging  to have and to hold said bargain premises to the said Jacob Hedrick his heirs and assigns to his and their own proper use benefit and behoof for ever and the Said Zoilus Bell for him self his heirs, & assigns, the said bargained premises unto the said Jacob Hedrick will warrant and for ever defend against the claim of him self & his heirs, and against the claim of all other persons whatever provided nevertheless that if the said Zoilus Bell his heirs Executors and Administrators, shall well and truly pay or cause to be paid unto the said Jacob Hedrick his heirs and assigns the afore mentioned sum of forty five dollars in the day and time mentioned and appointed, for the payment thereof in the Said promissory note mentioned with lawful intrest for the same according to the [illegible] of the Land do note then & from thence forward this present indenture and the right to the property thereby consigned as the said promissory note shall cause determine and be void to all intense and purposes,

Each census index seems to have its own quirks. I think the 1860 census can be searched for county as well as state. Sometimes the less you fill in the blanks, the better. Some of the indexes, for instance, will fail to return an existing result if you have too much data input (such as sex, gender, etc.) It just depends on how they've indexed that particular census. Using a date range for the age is best. (Instead of birth, 1838, use birth, 1835-1840, etc.; ages in census vary so). DO NOT put names in the relationship fields for 1850, 1860, and 1870 (such as the field for "mother," "spouse," etcetera). Those census years do not recognize relationships of persons in the household. Instead, use the "other person."  A word to the wise: these indexes are rife with transcription errors, so be creative with your wildcard searches. For example, on "Headrick" surname searches, I always try: Hedrick, Headrick, He*ck, *drick, H*drick, etc. I vary input, such as "H*drick" (in the surname field) and "Blount," "Tennessee" for county and state; then remove the county if I'm not getting the right results. I have tried searches for the first name, county, and state (without the surname). It usually returns too many results, usually, but not always, and it can help find someone whose surname is badly misspelled. I've rarely tried this, but it might work: become familiar with common transcription errors. The transcribers often have trouble reading the old-fashioned script and cannot tell "s" from "l"; or "r" from "s," "n," etc. Capital "T" with a flourish is often transcribed as "P." Thus, "Thomas," as obvious as that seems to the descendant, might be transcribed as "Phomas."

1870 is one of the worst census years to search. It doesn't state relationships, and FamilySearch does not have it indexed by county. Therefore, adding the county doesn't weed out the results at all. Searching for "Headrick" of "Blount, Tennessee," will turn up all Headricks in Tennessee. It may also turn up "Hedrick," (common alternates), but not "Haedrick" or "Hadrick" or "Hetrick." But for what it's worth, I sometimes find it easier to search census straight from the collection, not from the main page at FamilySearch. Here's the page for 1870 Census Search:

To find the Census search tool for any decade, I usually just search Google for "1880 census search at FamilySearch" or something like that. Ancestry probably has similar tools, but requires an account (not free, except for the trial period); I don't know if they use the same census index.

These wildcard searches have helped me greatly. I was able to find "Jacob Hddrix" and "William Hedrink" this way.

Witnesseth that the said James Morris for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars to him in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged has granted bargained sold aliened consigned and confirmed and by these presents do grant bargain sell alien convey and confirm unto the said Jacob Hedrick his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land situate lying and being in the tenth district of the third section of originally cherokee now Murray County in said state which said tract or lot of land is known and distinguished in the original plan of said district, by the number eighty seven (87) containing one hundred and sixty acres more or less having such shape form and marks as appear from the plat and Grant for the same. Summary: In this Lumpkin County, Georgia, deed (filed in Murray County, Georgia), on 26 September 1840, A.B. Barker binds himself unto Peter Hedrick, for a total obligation of $425, under the following condition: A.B. Barker sells land lot 282 in the 8th District, Third Section, of Murray County, Georgia, to Peter Hedrick, receiving from Peter a promissory note for $262.50, due 26 December 1841. If A.B. Barker makes good the title to the land whenever the note is due, then the above obligation of $425 will be null and void; otherwise, it remains in force.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the said A. B. Barker has this day sold unto the said Peter Hedrick one lot of land Number 282 two hundred & eighty two in the eighth district of the third section of originally Cherokee now Murray County for which the said Peter Hedrick has made & executed his promissory note for 262½  two hundred & sixty two & a half dollars due the twenty fifth of December in the year eighteen hundred & forty one if the said A. B. Barker shall make or cause to be made good & sufficient titles to the said lot or parcel of land whenever the said note shall be due & paid then this obligation to be null & void else to remain in full force & virtue in law in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal the day & date above written.

Edmondson of Murray County, Georgia, deeds to James Hedrick of the same place, for [sum of $920? or $320?, (written out)], for 60 acres of land on the west side of land lot no. 50 in the 10th District, 3rd Section, of Murray County. This was land formerly owned by Alvin Logan, which was seized from him by Sheriff James Buchanan, former sheriff, by virtue of a writ of firi facius against Alvin Logan and James Edmondson in favor of SS ?Larson/Lanier? and Brothers, and sold at the courthouse door at Spring Place, to John L. Edmondson, in January 1854, for [illegible sum].

1. The mark that crosses the “t” is so long, it crosses the “l,” too; it also gets thin as it ends, which didn’t copy well; so in the copy, this looks  like “To tol” instead of “To lot.”

2. Line 13, illegible: looks like “huutun,” which makes no sense; read in context, it could be a sum, such as “hundred” or “nineteen.”

3. At first, this looked like “Three.” The first letter does not look like the clerk’s other “T’s” and does look more like “N,” so it may be “Nine.”.

4. Line 14: in some previously published transcripts of this deed, I left out nine words, i.e. “John L. Edmondson as aforesaid by him the said” before continuing, “James Headrick…”; this changed the meaning of the document, and I apologize.

5. Line 17: in some previously published transcripts, I left out nine words: “and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell” before continuing “unto him…”

6. Line 19, illegible: looks like “liened” or “lived”; could be either.

7. Line 20, illegible: I think the word here is “auction,” but it could even be “action” or “audit.”

Note: This clerk’s handwriting is very compressed and hard to read in places. The lower-case letter “d” looks more like a “u” or “n.” In some places, “Hedrick” looks like “Hearick,” but judging by the appearance of the letter “d” in all other instances (e.g., “hundred” and “did”), I have transcribed it as “Hedrick.” Some terms had to be transcribed by their context, such as “in fee simple” or “delivered.” This was one of the hardest deeds to read and I'm still not confident I've transcribed it accurately. Unfortunately, the sums were some of the hardest things to read, so I've finally had to admit that the sums are illegible, to me.
