Miss Brownlow Elopes
Bristol, Tenn., Sept. 8.—Miss Cloyetta Brownlow, daughter of Congressman W. P. Brownlow, of Jonesboro, Tenn., eloped with Mark E. Pritchett, a liveryman, of Jonesboro, and they were married at Bristol. The attentions of Pritchett to Miss Brownlow are said to have been opposed by the congressman, hence the elopement. The young lady was a favorite in Washington social circles the past season.

Memmler Extracts in Pritchett Research, Cartersville, Georgia
Pritchett and Memmler Research Notes
Mrs. Frances "Fannie" Pritchett, of Cartersville, later of Marietta and of Atlanta (can't recollect maiden name at moment; first husband was William Pritchett, of Cartersville, Bartow County, Georgia. Fanny later married a Dr. Memmler, an odd little fellow of foreign birth, who came down from up north. He was described as a dwarf or a hunchback, and was known as a quack doctor and a flim-flam artist. He described his cures as "miracles," and claimed to cure the incurable. Opium was his strong suit--he finally committed suicide by taking it. He was called an adulterer, but was acquitted of that charge. He was charged with wife beating, and was not acquitted. He took his case to the Supreme Court of Georgia, and when that failed, begged a gubernatorial pardon. The governor declined to get involved; Memmler moved his family from Maritta back to Cartersville in the dead of night, then killed himself. Someone had his grave watched every night for a week--perhaps to make sure his alleged suicide and burial were not part of a scam to help him escape back to the north.

[Subject]: F. C. Memmler vs. W. W. Roberts in "The City Court: Judge Neal Turning out Cases in a Hurry. An Interesting Case," The Courant-American (Cartersville), Thursday, 16 June 1887, page 3.
Summary: Cases of the June term are discussed. The "Interesting Case" is "Mrs. F. C. Memmler vs. W. W. Roberts, sheriff," brought by Mrs. Memmler in order to try to recover a $370 fine paid by her late husband in an earlier court case for the crime of wife-beating, for which the husband was arraigned. He had signed a note for the fine to avoid the alternative of "hard labor in the chaingang for the space of twelve months." The husband had appealed his case all the way to the [state] supreme court and lost, then applied to the governor for a pardon. "On the 20th of January, 1886, while the petition for pardon was being considered by the governor, the defendant, rather than be imprisoned, paid to the sheriff the full amount of the fine ($370), taking from him a receipt stipulating that the money was being paid by his wife; and, further, that in the event of a pardon, the said amount was to be returned to Mrs. Memmler. On the evening of the 20th the fact of the governor's refusal to interfere was telegraphed to defendant's counsel. That night the defendant died very suddenly. The money thus paid to Mr. Roberts as sheriff is the amount for which this suit was brought to recover. The plaintiff bases her right to recover upon the ground that the wife cannot be made responsible for the husband's debts." Various points of the law, for and against recovery, are discussed. The plaintiff won, but the case was expected to be appealed all the way up to the [state] supreme court.

of Lothair, Georgia
[Subject]: William Pritchett of Lothair in “To Be Their Own Factors: Naval Stores Producers Dissatisfied with Middlemen,” /The Morning News/(Savannah, Chatham, Georgia), 1887-1900, Thursday, 16 May 1895, page 3.
Another subhead: “They Do Not Think the Best Results Possible Ae Obtained Under the Present System, and Propose to Become Factors on Their Own Account—An Organization Perfected.”
Meeting of Naval Stores Operators
Organizers:
1) Mr. Albert Pridgen, Chairman
---of Pitts [Wilcox, Georgia]
---“a prominent naval stores man”
2) Mr. G. W. Varn, Secretary
---of Luraville, [Suwannee], Florida
Meeting Place: Masonic Hall, [Savannah, Chatham, Georgia]
Date: “yesterday” (est. Wed., 15 May 1895)
Result: new organization formed, “the Turpentine Operators’ Protective Association”
---Capital Subscribed: $10,000
---Membership: (of those present) “several did not unite” with the new organization, but “about a dozen operators who were unable to come to the city have taken stock in the association”
---par value of share: $100
Attendance: lower than expected; about 25-30 present
---Present: “D. T. Doughtry of Cordele; J. P. Coffee, Coffee; E. L. Vickers, Arabi; E. H. Vickers, Hybert; A. Pridgen, Pitts; E. S. Gaulden, Oldtown, Fla.; E. W. Bullock, Seville; J. K. Young, Valdosta; D. C. Newton, Pooler; P. H. Carter, Offerman; F. B. Collins, Cairo; F. E. Breen, Doctortown; G. W. Varn, Luraville, Fla.; William Pritchett and H. E. Pritchett, Lothair; W. C. Alford, Daisy; E. P. Rentz, Covena; H. E. Pritchett, Willingham; H. C. Carr, Claxton; W. H. Page, Lyons. Mr. Gignilliat of Gignilliat & Stubbs, was present as legal advisor.”
Chairman’s concerns: “unsatisfactory condition of the naval stores business from the operators’ standpoint” ; low prices (past 2-3 years); poor market ; needs, to obtain better results; need “some concerted action by the producers….” ; need cooperation, protection of business interests; made reference to previous meetings at Cordele, [Crisp, Georgia] where a charter had been formed (submitted here for consideration of adoption; to be explained by Gignilliat.
Speakers: “Messrs. Doughtry, Carter, Vickers and other operators” (“Some were not as mild as the chairman.” They were dissatisfied with the perceived manipulation of the Savannah market (low prices). “One operator ventured the suggestion that the factors were speculating in spirits.” Other concerns: methods of product disposal (complaints of factors in error, non-specific facts); suggestion of having an agent to handle “their stuff” in the market, to protect their interest with “the factors.” [Quote by a Member]: “It’s the middlemen we believe are considerably to blame for the present low prices,” said one of the operators to a Morning News reporter. [End Quote].
[Editorial Quote]: “There is hardly any doubt, judging from the statements made to the News reporter by a number of the operators, that the real intention of the association is to establish another cooperative factorage house in Savannah, modeled somewhat after the Savannah Naval Stores Company.
“Some of the operators who came up for the May week festivities and who did not take part in the meeting expressed the opinion that nothing would come of the new movement and that no efforts to bring the great body of operators together in a cooperative scheme such as this association contemplates would ever succeed.” (Promotors disagree, feeling it will succeed).
Result: Charter unanimously adopted (about 20 voting; some had left); by-laws adopted; elections made.
Elections:
President, D. T. Doughtry; First Vice President, K. M. Patterson; Second Vice President, J. W. West.
Directors: R. L. Bush, J. W. Callahan, P. Rentz, H. E. Pritchett (doesn’t say which one; probably the one from Willingham); P. H. Carter, J. K. Young, D. C. Newton, and E. L. Vickers.
---Remarks: “Directors have large powers, and will lay out the line of action for the association.” Also, “directors were chosen from widely separated points in order that each might have a considerable field to work on for new members.”
Final Remark: “The Savannah factors, while declining to discuss the movement, do not appear to be at all disturbed by the prospects of having their business diminished through its agency.”

Tuesday-July 28th. 11:30 A M
My dear Aunt Pritchett,
So glad to hear from you last Thursday and to known you are well. I didnt write last week as I have been so hot, like everyone else and had to close up the house with the Air conditioner on all the time it was just to dark for me to make any kind of effort. Just did what I had to and that was it. I mostly listen to my Talking Book machine like you would sit and read a book. Today is the first day in two weeks or more that by this time of day I havent turned the A C on. We have had no rain in 15 days and everything is brown-just dried up. Seems like we are experiencing a summer like last. I see your temp in Chatt. has been a hundred. Just hope you have been cool.
I went to Lindas last week (WEd) and spent the night and helped her break and can 2 bu. of green beans. She got 42 qts. and gave me two messes to cook. They were Ky. Wonders and so good. She had plenty of Gr. peepers to I made her 24 stuffed ones for her freezer. When I get home I am so tired. Don't mind going once in a while. I also did 5 loads of clothes and dried and folded them all up with the exception of the towels. I left them in the dryer fo finish. Figured they could fold them.
I want you to quit worrying about the pillow tops you have for me. Yes I would love to have you come anytime you can. You know that!! If I had someone to bring me to see you I would. You know we both are in the same boat. Life is too short to worry about much of anything really, but we both love one another and that is what co [cut-off; type runs off of page]. I will love the pillow tops even if I never see them as i know you did them in LOVE, but have faith enough in the big MAN upstairs that I will get to use them and that you will be to see me soon!!
I hope you are enjoying Ben or if he hasnt arrived yet I know you will have a good time. Excuse me I forgot when you said he would come. Any way tell him I said hello and would like to see him also.

Linda told me Jan had called her and that Jan was still planning on meeting us in the MTNs on Aug 8th and if Jan caouldnt make ut she would call and let us know.
My vision seems to be better or I have got adjusted and learned to use what sight I have. I still cant read much if any and doubt I could drive a car, but I havent lost hope. I dont know if I ever want to drive the way traffic is and the crazy people out that think they can drive. Have you been hearing of all the shooting on the freeways in Calkfornia they are having? About 8 persons have been killed because of drivers that are so impatient. Hope it dont catch on in Tenn. or any where for that matter. Cruel old world out there!
I won't get to come for the reunion as I will be in the MTNS. Sorry. Tell all hello for me.
Bill wanted me to ask you about the Balm of Gilead tree. It is loosing its leaves and he cant figure out if the dry weather is causing it. I sure would hate to for it to dye.
I have managed to keep my patience \flowers/ at the patio porch watered, but this morning the water dept ask everybody to stop watering gardens, grass, washing card, etc. I guess the water situation is getting critical. We are supposed to get a 30% rain this afternoon and evening. I sure hope so.
Bill and I were right busy last week with putting a new drain field in \and/ a new top on the septic tank. Bill had a Company build the top and do some patch work and he borrowed a back hoe to dig a 60 foot ditch and Bill laid the pipe. Now he is waiting on the man to come back and cover it up. With gravel all it cost us $500.00 Oh well that is better than paying rent in an Apt.. I know all along I will have to pay out for maintencework. I would drather be here than any place I can think of.
I must close and fix me some dinner. Think I will microwave me a stuff pepper. I have some green beans cooked and cornbread, so i will slice me a tomatoe and an onion. Dont that sound good. ha. So glad you get to go out and eat instead of cooking.
You stay well and write when you can.
I love you the most!!!
