History notes: From at least 1831 to 1832, the territory now in Murray County was part of Cherokee County, Georgia. Murray County (and several other counties) were formed out of Cherokee County during the 1832 Cherokee land lottery. Prior to 1831, the territory was transitional, as it had been part of the Cherokee Nation and was usurped by the State of Georgia at the time of the Indian Removal Act of 1829. Many Murray County deeds use terminology such as “…formerly Cherokee now Murray County” or “…Murray County, formerly Cherokee.” The above deeds originated in Clarke County, but refer to land in Murray County, formerly Cherokee.

Transcription Notes: Transcribed by D.K. Pritchett on 28 December 2015 from handwritten record on file in the Superior Court of Murray County, Georgia, Deed Book G, page 457. Writing is somewhat compressed. Old style of leading “s” written as “f” is used within the document (transcribed herein as “s”). There is yet another deed beginning at the bottom of page 457, not transcribed here. That deed is from Charles Silas to D. I. Rials, for Lot 294 in the 12th District, 3rd Section, originating in Wilkinson County and filed in Murray County. It appears to be unrelated to the above deeds. In the first deed, the names “?Test” Ranson and “Daken” are hard to read—it could be some other name. In the second deed, the second set of names is actually placed in the right-hand column, but cannot be done here because of space and layout considerations.

* "Dum" appears as an extra word here, probably intended as "Dunn," and is unnecessary since the surname is again added after "W.H."

** This word probably should be "described," but does appear to be "elisebeth," and could be an instance of the original clerk misreading a deed instrument.

  1. The mark that crosses the “t” is so long, it crosses the “l,” too; it also gets thin as it ends, which didn’t copy well; so in the copy, this looks  like “To tol” instead of “To lot.”

  1. Line 13, illegible: looks like “huutun,” which makes no sense; read in context, it could be a sum, such as “hundred” or “nineteen.”

  1. At first, this looked like “Three.” The first letter does not look like the clerk’s other “T’s” and does look more like “N,” so it may be “Nine..

  1. Line 14: in some previously published transcripts of this deed, I left out nine words, i.e. “John L. Edmondson as aforesaid by him the said” before continuing, “James Headrick…”; this changed the meaning of the document, and I apologize.

  1. Line 17: in some previously published transcripts, I left out nine words: “and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell” before continuing “unto him…”

  1. Line 19, illegible: looks like “liened” or “lived”; could be either.

  1. Line 20, illegible: I think the word here is “auction,” but it could even be “action” or “audit.”

Note: This clerk’s handwriting is very compressed and hard to read in places. The lower-case letter “d” looks more like a “u” or “n.” In some places, “Hedrick” looks like “Hearick,” but judging by the appearance of the letter “d” in all other instances (e.g., “hundred” and “did”), I have transcribed it as “Hedrick.” Some terms had to be transcribed by their context, such as “in fee simple” or “delivered.” This was one of the hardest deeds to read and I'm still not confident I've transcribed it accurately. Unfortunately, the sums were some of the hardest things to read, so I've finally had to admit that the sums are illegible, to me.

Cross-reference no. 1: Murray County Heritage, p. 312: “In 1855 George Gibson gave land for a Methodist Episcopal church located in land lot 91 (10th District, 3rd Section). Trustees for the church were James Julian, William Headrick, Peter Brakebill, Abasalom Ledford, and Johnathan Lusalor. This is believed to be the church known as Gibson’s Chapel where school was held in 1880.”

Cross-reference no. 2: Land lot 91, 10th District, 3rd section, Murray County, Georgia, is dispensed with in Deed Book 32, pp. 15-21, as it is conveyed by various Headrick/Hilliard heirs of James Headrick, dec’d, unto Lester Headrick.

Note: I’ve tried to trace the William Headrick above, but can’t be completely sure. My speculation is that he might be the brother of James Headrick (who married Minerva Stephenson). I have very little information on that William, but he was born about 1837-1838 and would be old enough to handle this land transaction of 1870. His brother, John B. Headrick, lived in Spring Place at one time, and had a granddaughter who married a Hilliard: John B. Headrick’s son, James Headrick, was the father of Lillie Bell Headrick, who married Amos W. Hilliard. This could be the Hilliard connection from the deed. However, I haven’t researched far enough to rule out some other Hilliard-Headrick connection, and I can’t find much information on John B. Headrick’s brother, William.

There is another William Headrick of the appropriate age in Murray County, but his land is in northern Murray, not Spring Place, and he has no close connections to the Hilliard family, as far as I know.

[Note: Lillie Bell Headrick’s mother, Sarah Dunn, is also descended from a Headrick.]
