Elizer, Slave Girl, in Sheriff's Sale, 1833, Cherokee County, Georgia

Elizer was a Negro slave girl, born about 1818 or 1819. She became associated with Cherokee County, Georgia, in the north Georgia mountain region. She belonged to Joseph Waters. In 1833, one Winchester Dumas won a fi fa judgement against Joseph Waters. The court put a levy (fine) on Elizer, causing her to be sold. The advertisement is quoted below:

"Will be sold, at the Court-House in Cherokee county on the first Tuesday of May next, between the lawful hours of sale, the following property, to-wit:—
"One Negro GIRL by the name of Elizer, fourteen or fifteen years of age ; levied on as the property of Joseph Waters, to satisfy a fi fa issued from a justice's court in favor of Winchester Dumas against Joseph Waters; levied on and returned to me by a constable."

The rest of the ad is not relevant to Elizer. The ad is signed "A. H. Johnson" (probably the name of the sheriff of Cherokee County).

This early era was just after the 1832 lotteries in Georgia. Previous to that, the region was part of the Cherokee Nation. After some of the early lotteries, Cherokee County, which was very large, was split up into several smaller counties. I offer these facts in hopes that it may help someone identify the slave girl, Elizer, for any descendants she may have had.
