William H. Dunn's parents, according to his Social Security Application, are Stanfield Dunn and Mandy Smith. That application gives his birth as 10 April 1869, Cookeville, , Tennessee (yet Stanfield Dunn and Mandy Smith were not married until 1879 (ten years later), according to the marriage index. On William's death record, with his wife, "Lular Dunn" as informant, his birth is 1871 and his parents are Stanfield Dunn and Amanda White. It is not unusual for an in-law to mix up her mother-in-law's maiden name, but she would likely know her husband's parents. Note that all of these people seem to have been born and lived for decades in White County, Tennessee, NOT Murray County, Georgia. (That is a terrible mix-up on Find A Grave; DNA should help prove it, if family members are tested). William does not appear with his parents in the 1880 census, unless he is the same person as James H. Dunn, which he could be (because James disappears later on). From 1900 on, Census has William's birth as Dec 1874, 1873, 1867, 1878, and finally, 1871. Then his tombstone has 1871. I've never seen such a broad range of error on a year of birth. I think that James H. Dunn, born Sep. 1879, could be the same child as William H. Dunn. It would explain a lot! In US Census, this person may actually be the same as James H. Dunn, who appears in 1880 US Census, White County, Georgia, as the son of Stanfield and Amanda Dunn.
Bill and Lula Dunn were my great grandparents.I've done quite a bit of research on the Dunn line.It is very confusing,to say the least.I'm pretty sure Bill's name was William Hayes Dunn.As far as his birth date,I'm not too sure of.His death certificate has Mandy White as his mother.His mother's maiden name was Amanda Smith.Lula's mother's maiden name was White.Lula's father and mother were Joshua and Mary Lou Ellen(White)Sherrell.
